Huang Tingjian said: "I read Yang's book, only to know that Xu (Hao) and Shen (Shen) are both dusty." Indeed, although both Xu and Shen Kaifa work hard, they lack a sense of strangeness.

Shen Chuanshi, born in 769 and died in 827, was born in Wuxian (now Suzhou, Jiangsu). Tang calligrapher. Word for word. At the end of Zhenyuan (785 ~ 805), he was a scholar in Tang Dezong, a collator of Prince Edward, a bachelor of Hanlin, a calligrapher in China and an observer in Hunan. In the year of Bao Liyuan (825), she worshipped Shang Shu You Cheng and became an official assistant minister. There are model laws on work ethics, behavior and grass. Zhu's "Continued Book Break" ranks it with, Yu Shinan, Chu Suiliang and Liu Gongquan. Song Ouyang Xiu's "After June 1" says: "Handed down teachers' books are not integrated and easy to be cute." Mi Fei in Song Dynasty knew little about other people's calligraphy, but he admired Shen Chuanshi. It is said that Shen's calligraphy is "like a dragon swimming in the sky, a tiger sitting by a stream, calm and carefree, with clear bones." It is said that Shen Shu was the best after the middle Tang Dynasty, and Mi Fei called Shen Chuanshi the main scholar. Tao's Book History Society said that he was "good at writing, running and cursing, taking books as his name". Books handed down from ancient times include Luochi Temple Monument, Poems of Yuelu Temple in Youdaolin, and Shi Jingming in Liuzhou. Luochi Temple Monument was published in the first month of the first year of Tang Changqing (82 1). Written by Han Yu, written by Shen Chuanshi and sealed by Chen Zeng. I once lived in Liuzhou, Guangxi for a long time. In the Qing Dynasty, only He preserved Song Tuo's "The Orphan Book", which was handed down from generation to generation. There is a photocopy of Kolo edition in the Japanese Bo Wen Museum. The calligraphy of this monument is beautiful and clear. Although the font is thin, it hides meat, which is slightly barren and extremely cute. The late Tang Dynasty was a period of depression in calligraphy, but the school of "paying fees" represented by Shen Chuanshi obviously brought some vitality to the dull book world, and also provided valuable experience for Liu Gongquan to create "Liu Ti".

The regular script "Liuzhou Luochi Temple Monument" was written by Shen Chuanshi at the age of 53, and the inscription was written by Han Yu, a great writer, to commemorate and celebrate Liu Zongyuan's political achievements in being demoted to Liuzhou secretariat. The stone tablet stands in Luochi Temple and has long since disappeared. As for what year it was destroyed, it is impossible to find out. The rubbings we saw today were photocopied according to Song Tuo's Lonely Book collected by He in Qing Dynasty. Browse the calligraphy of this tablet, the breath is fresh and mellow, and the bones are healthy. Although the words are thin, they are quite healthy and beautiful, and the meat is hidden in the ribs, which is slightly barren. At first glance, it is very similar to Liu's book, but it is essentially different from Liu's book. It is that Liu's book is too introverted and scary, but Shen's book does not have this feature. Although zhonggong is a little introverted, it is still relatively loose on the whole. Another difference with Liu Shu is that, in structure, the structure of Shen Shi's calligraphy tends to be lower left and higher right, slightly to the right. Of course, there are some similarities between this calligraphy and Liu's calligraphy, including vertical hook, dot, apostrophe, apostrophe and vertical needle hanging, and some words are linked together, such as "Yan", "Imperial edict" and "Liu". Please read a sentence in Wang Duo's postscript to this rubbings: "Shen Shu's widowhood originated from Yongxing, and Liu and Ou Lvgeng became one". If Wang Duo's words are to be believed, it is obvious that Shen Shi inherited Liu. But according to Liu Gongquan's Biography of Old Tang Dynasty, Liu is older than Xiao Jiu. At the same time, there is a passage in this biography that is also intriguing: "Gong Li is a beginner of Wang Shu, who has read modern brushwork all over, and has a charm and is a family of his own." Perhaps this "modern brushwork" includes Shen Chuanshi. For example, comparing Liu Shu's "Li Sheng Monument" with "Luochi Temple Monument" is quite like writing with a pen. It seems that Wang Duo's right to apply for Liu Ben Kung Fu will be discounted. When talking about calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty, Huang Luzhi once said that "in the early Tang Dynasty, the study of Chinese characters was vigorous and vigorous, and it gradually became full after Kaiyuan, and the disciples such as Liu and Shen after Yuanhe recovered their vitality." It can be seen that both Liu and Shen are calligraphers who try to "correct the disease of hypertrophy" and take "freshness" as their beauty. In today's words, Liu and Shen were both innovative calligraphers at that time. In this way, it is not surprising that Liu and Shen have similar styles.
