Anecdote of "the first pass in the world" plaque

People who visit Shanhaiguan scenic spot in Qinhuangdao must take photos in one place, that is, the "First Pass in the World" tower. There are many theories about the origin of this plaque.

This is a story my father told me when I was a child. Looking back now, I think it is a very interesting folklore. According to memory, the arrangement is as follows:

During the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a poor man in a small village outside Luanzhou, Yongping Prefecture. This man has no house or ridge at home, no food for the night at home, and his bag is often empty, leading a hungry and cold life. Although he is so poor, he knows a few words, and sometimes he teaches several primary school students to read three-character classics and hundreds of surnames to make up for the lack of rice. Often in front of everyone, children will also say a few sour words. Although he is decent and upright, people still laugh at him as a "sour scholar".

On this day, the acid scholar traveled thousands of miles to visit the calligrapher Xiao Xian. A scholar and a little sage, resigned and retired at home. The sour scholar is nominally visiting, but in fact he wants to take a chance and talk to Xiaoxian. After running for several days, I finally came to Xiaoxian's house. Looking up, I saw a notice posted on the door, "No reservation will be accepted." When the sour scholar saw it, his heart was cold and cold, and he suddenly lost his breath. Alas, this trip was in vain. He doesn't feel blisters on his feet. It hurts. Thirsty and tired sour scholar, sitting on the steps of Xiaoxian's house, seems to be falling apart.

Just when the acid scholar was flustered, a drunken man with sloppy clothes staggered to the door of Xiaoxian's house. The drunk came to the front door, opened his sleepy eyes and looked at the sour scholar.

"What the hell are you ... what did you do ...? "

The sour scholar got up hurriedly and saluted the drunk deeply. "I am from Luanzhou, Yongping, and I have come to meet Mr. Xiao, a calligrapher." .

"Oh, another one."

"I dare to ask questions when I visit you."

"Ha, ha, ha, poor! If you have something to say, just say it. Turn ... what turn! "

"Sir, is it convenient for you to introduce me to Mr. Xiao?" While speaking, the sour scholar saluted the drunk again.

"Come with me!"

The acid scholar followed the drunkard into the living room, and all the way from the gate to the living room was unimpeded. Servants coming and going all bowed to the drunk. The drunk sat down as the owner of the living room, and two maids offered fragrant teas. Then the two handmaids said to the drunk, "What else do you want?" The drunk waved his hand and said, "Good wine and good food, I will continue to drink with my guests."

The sour scholar quickly got up and saluted the drunk deeply.

"I don't know whether Mr. Xiao is at the scene. I was rude. "

"Ha ha, I just scribble a few words. It's nothing. No gifts. "

Then the two men pushed a cup and drank it for a change.

They drank from noon until dusk, and Xiaoxian was as drunk as a fiddler.

"Come ... come ... come, pen and ink!" Xiaoxian shouted.

Two handmaids brought pen and ink and rice paper. Calligraphers don't use pens at all. He put his right hand in the coat sleeve, dipped it in ink, then waved the coat sleeve dipped in ink and drew a long black shadow on the spread rice paper. Then I gave this black lacquer rice paper to the acid scholar. "Friend, please accept my calligraphy."

The sour scholar was blindsided. God, have I been running around for days? Is this the calligraphy I got?

Just when the sour scholar was speechless, Xiao Xianhong's hearty voice came from his ear, "Fujian!"

The sour scholar went home with rice paper painted with hooligans in dismay.

In the eighth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (1472), Ming Xianzong Zhu Jianshen issued a letter and hung a plaque at the east gate of Shanhaiguan. Soon, the plaque was made, and under the supervision of the magistrate, the plaque of "the first pass in the world" was hung at the east gate. After hanging the plaque, I found a great event! There are only four words on the plaque, "the first pass in the world", and the position of one word is empty and not written. The magistrate sent an official to ask the writer Xiaoxian, what's the matter?

The director will be back soon,

Xiao Xian said, "I have a word, which is in the home of a poor scholar in Luanzhou, Yongping. If you give me three hundred and twenty pieces of silver, you can get it. "

The magistrate ordered it to be finished as soon as possible. The chief arrived with three hundred and twenty sycees.

Carve the word "one" on the plaque. Oh! It's perfect. How beautiful!

The five characters of "the first pass in the world" are in one go!
