Nabokov’s card reading method

Nabokov is the greatest writer of the twentieth century and a recognized stylist. His life was unique: "I don't belong to any club or group, I don't fish, I don't cook, I don't dance. , do not flatter colleagues, do not sign books, do not sign manifestos, do not drink alcohol, do not go to church, do not undergo psychological treatment, and do not participate in demonstrations." Representative works include: "Lolita".

Nabokov loved the card writing method. He wrote short stories and novels on index cards first, and then shuffled the order of the cards from time to time during the writing process.

In an interview, he answered this way: The conception of the work precedes the work itself. Like playing charades, I randomly filled in the blanks. I wrote these passages on cards until I had finished the novel. My writing schedule was flexible, but I was particular about my writing tools: lined Bristol cards, a not-too-sharpened rubber pencil.

Similar to Nabokov is the famous Chinese writer Qian Zhongshu. It is said that he accumulated nearly 100,000 cards or reading notes in his life.

How to use the card? There are two methods: excerpting and thinking

Excerpting means that when we read, if we see better famous quotes, we can use cards to record them. The number of words should not be too many, and it should be within 300 words. Very suitable.

Thinking means that after we excerpt the golden sentences, we can continue to write down our own thoughts. When thinking about a certain sentence or a certain point of view, we must write down our own thoughts.
