In the third year of Qingli (1043), Zhao Zhen appointed Fan Zhongyan, a counselor and political officer, and others to launch the "Qingli New Deal" in an attempt to curb the increasingly serious land annexation and "three redundancies". However, due to the huge opposition, the reform was immediately suspended. In the eighth year of Jiayou's reign (1063), Zhao Zhen died in the Funing Palace in Tokyo at the age of fifty-four. Reigning for forty-two years, he was the longest-reigning emperor in the Song Dynasty. His posthumous title was Emperor Titian, Dharma and Dao, who was extremely meritorious and virtuous, divine, cultural, sage, Wu Ruizhe and Mingxiao. His temple name was Renzong and he was buried in Yongzhao Mausoleum.
