Most of the works of famous calligraphers have an anecdote, which helps to grasp the connotation of the works. For example, Wang Xizhi's masterpiece Preface to the Lanting Pavilion was written when he was slightly drunk, but he failed to write a better work after many attempts. Knowing this, we can deeply appreciate the Preface to Lanting, otherwise we can't understand its ins and outs, and we can't understand the meaning of the pen.
(3) Understand the knowledge of philology:
Calligraphers like to make some changes in their writing to achieve certain results. Sometimes they combine all kinds of fonts (such as official script and cursive script) into one font, and sometimes they learn to create words from Cangjie and add and subtract strokes for words. If you don't understand philology, the "sense of wholeness" in calligraphy will disappear, and there will be no beauty of word spacing and size.
