4. How to appreciate calligraphy

The beauty of China's calligraphy is unparalleled in the world. To appreciate calligraphy, you need to know the history and common sense of calligraphy. Calligraphy history includes calligraphy history and China history (calligrapher's creative background); Common knowledge of calligraphy includes philology knowledge, writing skills, ability to recognize inscriptions and artistic accomplishment.

(1) Understand the ancient and modern evolution of calligraphy-the history of calligraphy;

(2) Understand the calligrapher's ancient and modern background-history;

Most of the works of famous calligraphers have an anecdote, which helps to grasp the connotation of the works. For example, Wang Xizhi's masterpiece Preface to the Lanting Pavilion was written when he was slightly drunk, but he failed to write a better work after many attempts. Knowing this, we can deeply appreciate the Preface to Lanting, otherwise we can't understand its ins and outs, and we can't understand the meaning of the pen.

(3) Understand the knowledge of philology:

Calligraphers like to make some changes in their writing to achieve certain results. Sometimes they combine all kinds of fonts (such as official script and cursive script) into one font, and sometimes they learn to create words from Cangjie and add and subtract strokes for words. If you don't understand philology, the "sense of wholeness" in calligraphy will disappear, and there will be no beauty of word spacing and size.

(4) Have the ability to recognize inscriptions:

To appreciate calligraphy, we must have the ability to identify inscriptions, avoid appreciating fakes without knowing them, and completely absorb them, which will be detrimental to the study and appreciation of calligraphy.

(5) Ability to write:

As the saying goes, "an expert looks at the doorway, a layman looks at the excitement", and most calligraphy connoisseurs are also calligraphers. Only by knowing the skills of writing can we truly appreciate the beauty of calligraphy and the beauty of using pen and ink.

(6) artistic accomplishment:

Calligraphy is an art. When appreciating calligraphy, you should immerse yourself in it, enjoy it, look at it with your heart, and understand its "strength", "posture", "rhyme" and "charm" in order to truly achieve the purpose of appreciating calligraphy.
