Do I have to paste it when I practice writing?

Recently, in the process of discussing calligraphy with some book lovers, I found that many people have a misunderstanding, that is, the font of the post is too large. Here, let me explain to you why it can't be too big when writing.

Some friends who are beginners in calligraphy, especially those who study Wei Bei, like to write very large characters. There are three main reasons: First, many famous contemporary calligraphers' video lectures are written in big characters, and students will naturally write big characters according to the teacher's appearance. Secondly, because the words on the copybook are relatively large, I think Wei Bei's style is rough, crazy and heroic, which should be big characters. Third, many people feel very happy to write big characters, and it seems very comfortable to make great efforts to write. They feel that they can't write fine print without enough skills.

Epitaph of Tang and Li Yu, 58.5 cm high and 36 lines wide, each with 36 words. The word height is about 1 cm.

There is a big misunderstanding here. First of all, we must understand why we should copy calligraphy. What is the purpose of the post? I think the purpose of posting is because we can't see the writing process of ancient great calligraphers with our own eyes and have no chance to get their advice. So I want to restore their writing process through their handwriting, so as to learn calligraphers' writing methods.

Yuan Yanbo's epitaph in the Northern Wei Dynasty has 27 lines and 27 words. Chigo is 59 cm, 58.5 cm wide and 1.5 cm high.

If the answer is yes, then we should restore the author's writing process, and at least get the following basic information: what kind of pen he used, what kind of words he wrote, and what kind of paper or tablet he wrote on. When it comes to the size of words and pens, the problem arises: the words on most ancient inscriptions are actually very small, including Wei Bei. Common characters are the size of fingernails, and the height of larger characters is generally less than 5 cm. The pen used is also much smaller than the ordinary brush we use now.

Li Mi's epitaph is 104 cm high and 89 cm wide. Thirty-three lines, thirty-one characters, and the height of the characters is about 2.5 cm.

Although Mrs. Wei said in "Pen Map" that beginners should learn to write big characters first, they should understand that size is relative. The height of the big characters she said at that time would not exceed 5 cm, which was much smaller than that written by our common calligraphy lovers now. Therefore, when we start to learn calligraphy, we must first understand the original size of the words, which can be slightly larger than the original size, but the gap must not be too big. If the gap is too large, it seems simple, but in fact, when writing, the pen tip will be deformed, which will cause many unnecessary obstacles to trying to understand Chu Yuan's pen movement and artificially increase the difficulty of learning calligraphy.

Yuan Zhen's epitaph is 79 cm high and 79 cm wide, with 26 lines of regular script, full of 26 words and about 2 cm high.

In the book "Jin and Tang brushwork" written by the author, the differences between ancient and modern brushwork are discussed in detail.
