Random Talk on Couplets (1): Couplets should also talk about meter.

1898 In May, I overheard from a WeChat group that the "Second Bridge Grand Stage" in the suburban Second Bridge Park has been completed and officially opened to the public. The "Second Bridge Grand Stage" in the photo is no longer a simple open-air stage, but an antique building with carved beams and painted buildings. It is antique and elegant in style, which instantly raises the cultural image of this small town to a new height.

However, the most talked about in WeChat group is the couplets hanging on the pillars of "Er Qiao Grand Stage". Now that I think about it, I once saw a small notice on a small website asking for couplets on the "Er Qiao Grand Stage". There were not many words, but I was vague about how to evaluate the author's rights and interests, so I was able to shrug off it at that time and stayed. Unexpectedly, now, this pair of couplets, which was finally adopted, has finally been announced, inscribed and engraved by famous artists, and angrily hung in such a newly added scenic spot for tourists to enjoy and review.

If you get a better view, it will be a good combination. This pair of couplets can be written by famous calligraphers and hung on the "Second Bridge Stage" after carving. In the eyes of ordinary people, it must be a good couplet. -Unfortunately, in the eyes of people who know a little about rice, it is not a good connection, but there are serious problems.

Let's take a look at this couplet:

The first part is: the legacy of the Three Kingdoms, Er Qiao's hometown, Diya Shayang Castle, praising ancient music;

The bottom line is: a new chapter in the song of Nanjia New Town, a ten-foot paradise in a thousand lakes and a hundred miles of water town.

For the convenience of appreciation, let's add punctuation and rhythm:

The first part: Three Kingdoms/Legacy, Er Qiao/Hometown, Yifang/Diya, Shayang/Castle/Ode/Ancient Music;

Downward: Thousand Lakes/Chu Yun, Hundred Miles/Water Town, Ten Feet/Promised Land, Nanjia/Xincheng/Song/New Chapter.

In my opinion, the author of this pair of couplets still has some common sense of couplets and words. On the whole, there is a certain artistic conception, which takes care of the antithesis between the upper and lower couplets, even the use of numerals and the repetition of "ancient" and "new" In particular, the first three clauses of the upper and lower couplet are both parallel and self-arranged, which is relatively novel.

But there are three main problems:

1. There is an irregular double word in one place, and the couplet term is called "worm". That is, the word "Li" in Hometown and Hundred Miles. The word "le" in "Ancient Music" and "Promised Land" is not counted because of its different pronunciations.

2. The fourth clause in the upper and lower couplets, that is, the seven sentences in the last clause, is obviously not in accordance with the rhythm of the sentences and obviously divorced from the law. Pick it out and see:

Shayang/Castle/Ode/Ancient Music;

Ancient times: plain and fair.

Today: Tong Ping, Dong Dong, Dong Dong.

Nanjia/Xincheng/Song/New Chapter.

Ancient times: average, average, average

Today: average, average, average

No matter the ancient and modern sounds, there are obvious problems in the antithesis of the upper and lower couplet. What is rare is that all the taboos of "three-pointed tail" and "three-level tail" in couplets are "stepping on thunder", and even the seven words in the bottom couplet are all flat.

3. The third clause of the first part is "elegance", and the third clause of the second part is "Ten feet in heaven". And Ten Feet of Heaven is hard to understand.

For many years, many people still regard couplets as a very simple gadget, thinking that they can write couplets with a brush. This statement is ridiculous. As my title says: couplets should also talk about meter. If you want to do couplets well, please learn the meter first.
