City Hemi'an (1779-1858) was named Sanhai, with the courtesy name Kongyang, and the nickname Jindongshanren. Because of his admiration for Mifu, he was also named Mi'an and Dingdaoren. His father, Shi Hekuanzhai, was once famous for his poetry and calligraphy. Mi'an Xingcao was modeled after Mi and Su from the Song Dynasty and was involved in various schools in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In his later years, he finally achieved success, his book became famous, and he had five thousand disciples. People at the time called him the "Three Brushstrokes of the Bakumatsu" along with Kanmei Umiya and Makihisiko. Among the "three strokes", if we talk about talents, emotions and character, Mi An can be ranked first. While studying calligraphy and transmitting art, Mi An also studied calligraphy including calligraphy theory, calligraphy, calligraphy style and calligraphy materials. He wrote "Mi Family Calligraphy Jue", "Mi An Ink Talk", "Three Schools of Calligraphy", "Ink Field Must Bring" and "Kaixing". "Hui Bian", "Mi'an Cangbipu" and poetry collections, etc. These works have been popular among later scholars and still have a huge influence today.
"The Three Brushstrokes of the Bakumatsu" is a special term in the history of Japanese calligraphy, which refers to the three famous calligraphers who were active in the Japanese calligraphy circle at the end of the shogunate's politics in the middle and late Edo period. They are: Ichikawa Mi'an, Kanmei Umiya and Lake Makihisi. These three people were masters of Chinese calligraphy for a while. Shihe Mi'an imitated Mi Fu; their names were Wang Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing, the founders of the Haiwu sect; and Juan Linghu followed Wu Ouyang Xun.
