—— Female calligrapher Lin Yuying

Shen Peng

Lin Yuying, an amateur female calligrapher, lives in Huaibei City, Anhui Province, and has little information exchange with the outside world. However, with her hard work, she has made achievements and held her first solo exhibition in China Art Museum.

It is the common pursuit of many young and middle-aged calligraphers that I have come into contact with to promote the five-style calligraphy of truth, line, grass, official script and seal script in an all-round way, which not only reflects the comprehensive inheritance of tradition, but also can be said to be a kind of self-pursuit in the current trend of calligraphy diversification. Lin Yuying followed a traditional learning method. She laid a solid foundation from regular script and then extended it to various scripts. Once she mastered the basic laws of seal script and official script, she got rid of copying and improved her basic kung fu while creating, which reflected that she had a strong sense of creation, which was different from being a calligrapher who satisfied copying. In cursive script, Lin Yuying can display her talents better. The first Sino-Japanese women's calligraphy exchange exhibition held in Beijing in 1987 first attracted my attention. An ancient poem written in four feet was vigorous and simple in style, which had obvious pursuit of artistic conception compared with her previous works. After collective evaluation, this work was sent to Japan and exhibited in Ginza Art Museum in Tokyo. Japanese friends praised it as "manly".

Not unrelated to Comrade Lin Yuying's living in a remote area, her creation is not disturbed by impetuous and noisy atmosphere. She can't detect the habit of one-sided pursuit of commercialization and quick success. It is precisely because I have no distractions that I can really establish the "ontological concept" of calligraphy art. As for how to strengthen communication, better absorb the creative achievements of the ancients and modern people, condense the spirit of the times and show it with a lively personality, these are just the strengths of our information age. Lin Yuying's coming to Beijing to exhibit her works is an opportunity to exchange information. She also needs to go to the Expo to improve her aesthetic level in the communication with people with "equal intelligence".

At home and in our contacts with Japanese friends, we all have the same feeling: there are many women engaged in calligraphy, but there are not many outstanding people. There are many reasons, and organizational support and publicity by the media should play an important role. For works of real value and their authors, we should show them and make them known to the public.
