20 17 Xishuangbanna Songkran Festival holiday time: 20 17 Songkran Festival (Dai New Year1379): 7 days from April 10 to April 16. Work on April 8 (Saturday) and April 9 (Sunday). Dai language is called "Sangkang Bimai", which means "June New Year" or "Dai calendar New Year". In fact, the Songkran Festival is the New Year of the Dai calendar. Because of the Dai calendar, the New Year begins in June.
In order to welcome the arrival of the Songkran Festival, from mid-April, the Dai people began to kill pigs, chickens, wine and rice cakes. We will also prepare dragon boat rowing, flying high, cultural performances, traditional cockfighting and other activities, and the activities to celebrate the New Year are quite grand. This year is the Dai calendar 1377 New Year. At this time in Xishuangbanna, flowers are blooming and flowers are falling, and birds are singing and flowers are fragrant. The boys are busy preparing for the elephant foot drum dance, and the little girls are frolicking to prepare new clothes for the New Year.
The Dai people in Xishuangbanna are built by water, and they live around rivers, so water splashing activities are generally held on the banks of beautiful rivers. When the morning light shone on the bamboo building in Hongcun, people gathered by the river from all directions. At the beginning of splashing water, gongs and elephant drums sounded together, and copper bowls, washbasins and even buckets were filled with water and chased along the banks and lakes. The water facing the water and the water behind it poured incisively and vividly, full of songs and laughter everywhere, and the two sides suddenly became an ocean of joy.
