Jing means

The meaning of Jing: The original meaning refers to the name of a shrub; later it is extended to refer to the punishment staff; it also refers to the surname.

Jing (pronounced jīng) is a general standard first-level character (commonly used character) in Chinese characters. This character first appeared in bronze inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty. "Jing" is a knowing word. The early gold glyph of "Jing" has a human figure on the right and two "X"s on the lower left, which represent a kind of thorn. The whole glyph picture shows that the thorns of Jing pierce into people's hands and feet.

In the later period of bronze inscriptions, the character "well" was added to the glyph to indicate that this kind of thorn grows in the fields and farmers are easily injured when working in the fields. The shape of Qin seal characters has changed again based on the bronze inscriptions, adding the word "艸", which means that these thorns grow like grass and trees in the fields, so be careful. The shape of the Chinese character "Li" changed again, turning the person into a "knife" shape, which became the character "Jing". Until it developed into modern Chinese.

The word Jing is Congqi, the sound of punishment. "Shuowen Jiezi" says "Jing, Chu. Wood." The original meaning refers to the name of a shrub. This shrub is suitable for basket weaving and basket making. In ancient times, it was often used to make punishment sticks, so it was later extended to the meaning of punishment sticks. "Jing" can also be used to make hairpins. In ancient times, women could not afford gold and silver hairpins, so they could only use thorns as hairpins. Therefore, the word "Jing" later appeared as a modest name for a wife.
