Mo Youzhi is good at calligraphy and is one of the top ten calligraphers of the Qing Dynasty. Li Shuchang commented on his book that "the seal script is divided into Gaoqian and Bingsi is majestic." Mr. Sha Menghai, a leading figure in contemporary calligraphy circles, commented in his article "Calligraphy in the Past Three Hundred Years": "Mo Youzhi is the best at learning Deng Shi's seal script, followed by Zhao Zhiqian and Wu Xizai." Mr. Chen Zhenlian, a professor at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, commented on his book: "There was a Mo Youzhi in Guizhou. The exquisiteness of his works is not inferior to that of Zhao Zhiqian, Yang Shoujing, and Zhang Yuzhao, but may be better." Scholars from different eras and such a high-level calligrapher all unanimously praised Mo Youzhi's calligraphy achievements. In the 8th year of the Republic of China, Shanghai Youzheng Bookstore published "Mo Youzhi Zhencao Lishuan Moji", which was reprinted many times. Among the works of calligraphers and painters restricted by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage from exporting abroad, Mo Youzhi is among them. Among the modern and contemporary famous calligraphers and seal carvers, Yao Hua, Chen Zifen and Wang Chaorui were all influenced by his calligraphy style.
Mo Youzhi is excellent in all aspects of calligraphy, but the most praised one is his seal script. His seal script is rich in techniques. Yang Shoujing commented: "Zi Si's method of studying "Shaoshi Stele" is very high." He also "...collected more than a hundred seal carvings on Han stele heads, and many of his seal scripts were published from this time on."
Those who were famous for their seal scripts in the Qing Dynasty, such as Qian Xiu, Wang Shu, Sun Xingyan, Hong Liangji and others, all used hard pens, short brushstrokes, and dry ink to make seal scripts. Well-proportioned is called capable of doing things. Mo Youzhi inherited Deng Shiru's method of writing with a long edge and thick ink hanging from the wrist. The brush flows slowly, with twists and turns, which are rich, thick and precise; the structure is tight at the top and loose at the bottom; the composition and rows are well-organized, the style is peaceful and simple, the spirit is majestic, and it is natural and beautiful. It was unique in the calligraphy world of Qing Dynasty where there were many famous writers. In terms of official script, Mo Youzhi was also quite accomplished. Its style is ancient, its metaphors are more skillful than clumsy, its strokes are square and round, and its structure is based on the vertical shape of the characters, which eliminates the long-standing habit of flat and long scripts. Its compositions are mostly vertical and vivid, with a noble and ancient style and a solemn atmosphere. Because Mo Youzhi likes to collect and has a vision that is unusual for ordinary people, his books are imprinted with many famous monuments, such as the elegance of "The Ritual Vessel Stele", the clumsiness of "Zhang Qian Stele", and the muddy "Hengfang Stele". Mu, the use of the "Xia Cheng Stele", the brushwork of the "Tianfa Shen Prophecy Stele", and the composition of the "White Stone Shenjun Stele". His achievements should be compared with those of Tingzhou and Zizhen. In terms of regular script and regular script, although his influence is far less than that of seal script and official script. However, he seems to have made great achievements in his exploration of Wei. Since few of his works remain, we can only get a glimpse of his achievements from some of his letters, inscriptions and postscripts. His blunt and careless brushwork seems careless, but it has the beauty of natural flying. The rules and regulations are completed in one go, and the large and small are unevenly distributed. It has the ups and downs of mountains and rivers, and the cheerfulness of dark willows and bright flowers. When you catch the fish and forget about the trap, you will be full of spirit and energy, and the charm will be long. His regular script is based on Lu Gong, and integrates the Han and Wei Dynasties to appear simple, spontaneous, and full of scholarly style. Although Mo Youzhi was born in a remote place, he was diligent in academics, good at poetry, and proficient in collecting. Among his friends were many social sages and academic leaders, so he was able to "learn" and "know" each other, which enabled him to prosper and flourish. Establish an independent calligraphy circle. He also once said: "The inner paintings in books can be used to observe people; calligraphers can only win by specializing in pen and ink. However, in the past, the writers of moral articles and political affairs were not famous calligraphers, but a kind of true energy overflowed, and they were always better than calligraphers. ". Mo Youzhi was willing to be indifferent throughout his life and devoted himself to learning. He is not a famous calligrapher, but he is highly regarded by later generations. Most calligraphy commentators of the Qing Dynasty regarded Deng Shiru as the crown of the calligraphy world, but they all compared Mo Youzhi with him, making Mo Youzhi a flag flying high on the commanding heights of the calligraphy world, giving future generations a mountain to look up to. Sigh!
