Among the more than 20 criminals in the "Wutai Poetry Case", Wang Gong was the one who was demoted the furthest and punished the most. This made Su Dongpo feel very guilty and said: "I will tire you by doing this, but you will have a safe house." In the fourth year of Yuanfeng (1081), Su Shi wrote "Ci Yun and Wang Gong's Six Poems", one of which goes:
If you want to bear fruit for a thousand years, you must first destroy the February flowers.
Therefore, we teach that if you are poor to the bone, you should live a long life without end.
I have been escaping from Tianwang for a long time, why should I surrender to Japan?
Where is Pennsylvania? I went to Qixia for my son.
While Wang Gong was in Pennsylvania, Su Dongpo wrote many letters to him, repeatedly saying that Wang Gong was innocently implicated and suffered so much because of him, and that he felt very guilty and sad. Su Shi also said in "A Narrative of Wang Dingguo's Collected Poems": "Today, Dingguo offended me because of Yu, and was demoted to the sea for five years. One of his sons died in the demolition, and another son died at home. Dingguo also died of illness several times. Yu Yiyi blamed me very much, I dare not read it in writing." Su Shi advised Wang Gong not to lose heart, and suggested that he use the method of "rubbing the soles of the feet" to deal with the miasma. "Drinking less alcohol every day and adjusting your diet will often make your stomach qi strong." In order to comfort Su Shi, Wang Gong talked about Taoist longevity techniques in his reply to Su Shi, saying that he was practicing in Pennsylvania. Su Dongpo also liked the cinnabar and other specialties of Guangxi very much, so he wrote to Wang Gong from Huangzhou: "If cinnamon sand is not hard to come by, it would be better to give it to more than ten taels." The intimacy was beyond words.
In addition, the letters between Wang Gong and Su Shi are more about exchanging ideas on poetry, calligraphy and painting. Su Shi said: "(Dingguo) wrote hundreds of poems outside the mountains and sent them to me. They were all pure and harmonious, and had a kind voice to govern the world. His words and aspirations were no different from those of those who have achieved Taoism." Once, Wang Gong sent a letter to Su Shi, and Su Shi read it. Hou Zhi sighed, "I have received the Linjiang Military Letters sent by Dingguo for a long time. The two books repeatedly discussed the troubled patients in detail. They not only relieved my worries, but also washed away my confusion, and I gained a lot. However, the gains were not unreasonable. Those who know it and are allowed to do it, I hope you will always recite this sentence. Du Zimei never forgets the emperor when he is in poverty. Since the poet, there are only two famous people who live high in the temple and worry about their people. This can be seen from this the innocent heart of being far away from the world and worrying about his king.
When will the governor of Guilin leave? The waves of peach blossoms in Bian have already risen.
The clouds are overcast and the trees are low and far away. The cold wind at night disrupts the spring lights.
Some research says that this popular poem "Send to Zhang Jianyi and Uncle Yong in Guizhou" was written by Wang Gong in Pennsylvania. In fact, Wang Gong lived in Pennsylvania and was not obsessed with being demoted. Instead, he "read the scriptures more diligently and set up precepts and biographies to show them" ("Collected Works of Wang Dingguo"). He wrote ten volumes of "Analects of Confucius". Qin Guan also specially wrote Preface it. It is a pity that "Pinzhou Chronicles", written during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, has a simple record of Wang Gong's banishment to Binzhou in southern Xinjiang, but Wang Gong's poems are missing. The author has tried very hard to find more works written by Wang Gong in Pennsylvania. It is a pity that the trace of poetry is lost.
