Roboto is a sans serif font family designed for Android operating system. Google described the font as "modern, but approachable" and "emotional". This font is licensed under Apache license.
On June 2nd, 20 12+ 12, the whole font family officially offered to download it for free on the newly launched Android Design website. The font family includes regular and thin italics, light italics, regular italics, medium italics, bold, black and concentrated italics.
Roboto font is the default font of Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" and later Android versions. Since March 20 15 12, the default fonts of Google+ and Google Maps have also been changed to Roboto.
Stephen Coles, a typesetting critic in typographica.org, commented that Roboto is a "four-headed Frankenstein font" and described it as a "hodgepodge" typesetting style that is not well integrated. Other professional font designers claimed that there were obvious errors in the stressed font, while John gruber commented that this font was "Arial of Google".
Joshua Topolsky, editor-in-chief of The Verge, a technology news and online media, described the font as "clean and modern, but not too futuristic—it's not a science fiction font".
