In the 11th year of Xianfeng (186 1), Mu Zong succeeded to the throne. After being reused, Chen Fuen became close to Dai Heng and others to consolidate his position. Later, Dai Heng and others committed suicide and were beheaded for trying to stop Ci 'an and Empress Dowager Cixi from listening to politics. Chen Fuen was also disintegrated by Dai Heng's Party Aid Office because of the lack of Zhan Pengshou, and when he searched his home, he got Chen Fuen's private book "Obscure and Unknown Words", was arrested and imprisoned, lost his home, recovered the plaque given by Xuanzong, and sent it to Xinjiang to defend the border.
In June of the third year of Tongzhi (1864), Russia took advantage of the anti-Qing movement of the Hui people in Xinjiang to send troops to occupy Boluo Lake in the northwest of Yili. General Changqing of Ili led the army and the people to fight. Chen Fuen worked hard, and Changqing praised him, but he was not allowed. In the spring of four years, Xu Ming, the new general of Yili, said that Chen Fuen spared no effort to raise money and soldiers, pleading for release and approval. And ordered Chen Fuen to stay in Yili to help with the reimbursement. In May of five years, Jin Xiangyin, the leader of a Hui army in Xinjiang, captured Yili with the support of the army of the vast khanate (now Uzbekistan). Xu Ming died, and Chen Fuen was martyred with his relatives.
