What are the branches of Maoshan Sect?

The Maoshan sect has one hundred and eight sects, with thirty-six in the upper Maoshan and seventy-two in the lower Maoshan, as well as the Twenty-four Qingtang and the Three Ghost sects.

Maoshan Sect is another name for Shangqing Sect. Because it is located in Maoshan, it is called Maoshan Sect. It is also divided into North and South Maoshan Taoism. The North Maoshan is the founding place, and the Southern Maoshan is today's Luofu Mountain in Guangdong. The founder is Ge Hong. The Shangqing Sect was actually founded by Tao Hongjing Maoshan of the Southern Liang Dynasty, hence its name.

There were many Taoist legends in the Tang Dynasty, the famous ones include Zhang Guo, Ye Fashan, Luo Gongyuan and Lu Dongbin. Zhang Guo, who lives in the middle mountain, may have the secret to longevity and knows Qigong. He lived during the periods of Wu Zetian and Tang Xuanzong.

Ye Fashan, a native of Kuocang, Kuozhou (now Xianju, Zhejiang), was proficient in Taoism. The four generations of Emperor Gaozong, Zhongzong, Ruizong and Xuanzong lived for 107 years. The calligrapher Li Yong's "Mr. Youdao Ye Guozhong's Shinto Stele" is said to have been written by Ye Fashan in his dream, also known as "The Soul-Chasing Stele".
