Mr. Dong Chi's Translation of Classical Chinese

Translation of Biography of Mr. Dong Chi;

Mr. Yuanshan had a long word from the beginning. Because I admire Ji Shu's character, I changed my name to Xu Ye, named Ji 'an, and the word Dongchi. For generations, they were all from Xincheng County, Jinan. Mr. Xu's great-grandfather is my husband's guardian Xu Zhun. He was a scholar in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty and was an official in Yunnan. At that time, there were "four gentlemen in Shandong", and Shou Wugong was one of them. Mr. Dong Chi is my great-uncle, that is, the grandson of Mr. Jim who has the title of exam. When he was young, he studied at his grandparents' home and was influenced by the atmosphere of his grandparents' home. He has been good at writing poems since 15 years old and is loved by his grandparents. At the age of twenty-nine, at the time of social unrest (referring to the invasion of Qing soldiers), my mother died in chaos, so she gave up studying at school to cope with the imperial examination and lived in seclusion on the east bank of Lianshui. There are several huts with reeds as walls and wormwood as mats. The seat was covered with dust and the husband was calm. Shunzhi Xin Chou Year (166 1), once visited Qiantang, crossed the lonely mountain, visited Lin Hejing's former residence, crossed Zhejiang, went upstream to Tonglu, boarded the fishing platform, paid homage to Gao Fu's grave, lingered for a long time, and returned with poems. Thirteen years have passed, that is, the year when Emperor Kangxi returned to ugliness (1673). Because of a date with an old friend, I went to the Wandeng area in the west and haven't been out since I came back. By the end of Emperor Wu of Kangxi (1677 to 1678), there were imperial edicts for seclusion, and nobles from all walks of life gathered in Beijing like fish scales. The competent department intends to ask Mr. Dong Chi to reply, but Mr. Dong Chi resolutely declined on the grounds of old age and illness.

When Mr. Wang was young, he wrote articles. Influenced by Historical Records, Hanshu, Zhuangzi and Lisao, he was good at writing tragic and gorgeous words. He wrote a five-character poem similar to that of Tao Yuanming, but more like Meng Jiao. After middle age, he lived in seclusion in Tianlu, isolated from the world, liked to describe the fun of mountains and rivers, and praised the feelings of farm life. These are the words of the outside world, which are beyond the reach of poets under Chu Guangxi and Wang Wei. In the spring of Emperor Kangxi (1673), I went to his place with the late two brothers Xiqiao and Dongting, and saw that he lived in three old houses, which seemed to collapse after a long rain. I wrote a letter to the county magistrate of Xincheng, which said: In those days, Daozhou (Yuan Jie, with a good word, was once the secretariat of Daozhou) recommended Zhang Jixiu of Chu Shi, and asked the county magistrate to build more than ten straw houses for Zhang Jixiu, and gave him dozens of acres of paddy fields to avoid his corvee, so that scholars knew the sense of shame. In addition, Yang's book Su Tan records the monk's thatched cottage, saying that Feng Haisu and mud, Zhao () lifted it and painted a mud wall, is a beautiful talk of Wu people. Now Mr. Xu has to eat every day (it takes three or two days to eat food a day), and it is often empty (meaning that there is often no food at home). The acre where he lives is the same as that in Peng Yu. If Mr. Wang comes to donate money to build a thatched cottage, it will be another story after Yuan Cishan, Feng Haisu and Zhao.

Ten years later, Mr. Wang is seventy years old and even poorer. I wrote to him many times in Beijing and asked him for poems. My husband often declined humbly. I had to carve more than 200 poems hidden in the bookcase. Mr. Dong Chi could have been circulated for thousands of years, and his poems were circulated for his people. Two years later, he went to a friend's appointment and died in De-an Yu.

Mr. Dong Chi, thin in appearance and hale and hearty in spirit, looks like a pine on the bank of a stream and surprises cranes. His calligraphy is similar to that of Yu Yongxing (that is, Yu Shinan, who was given the order of Yongxing County, called "Yu Yongxing"). He has a very good relationship with his brothers in our village, so he wrote down his general situation.

It was written by Wang Shizhen, a native of Yuyang Mountain.
