Shuang Ling, bamboo arrows, proud Xue Mei, are competing with heaven and earth for spring.

This sentence is a famous saying of Wei Yuan, an enlightenment thinker, politician and writer in Qing Dynasty. Consciousness is that bamboo stands upright like an arrow in heavy snow and is not bent by snow; When plum blossoms are in full bloom. When the poets saw this scene, they felt as if they were fighting against heaven and earth, as if to win back spring. The deeper meaning is that people should be as arrogant as bamboo and plum, and they will not be overwhelmed by unhealthy trends from outside.

In the 21st year of Daoguang (184 1), Wei Yuan entered the shogunate of Yu Qian, the governor of Liangjiang, and directly participated in the war of resistance against Britain, personally interrogating the prisoners at the front. Later, seeing that the Qing government and the war were unclear, the capitulators were confused for a moment, misunderstood the country, resigned angrily and decided to write. In the 24th year of Daoguang (1844), Wei Yuan took the examination of does again, entered the imperial examination, and was assigned to Jiangsu as the magistrate of Dongtai and Xinghua. During this period, the salt policy was reformed and dikes were built to control water. He compiled 50 volumes of Atlas of Sea Countries on the basis of the Western historical and geographical data "Sizhou Zhi" compiled by Lin Zexu, combined with historical records of past dynasties, "Island Zhi" since Ming Dynasty and Yi language at that time. After revision and supplement, there are hundreds of volumes in Xianfeng two years (1852). Including world geography, history, political system, economy, religion, calendar, culture and products. It explored the road to becoming a powerful country in order to resist aggression, correct the current disadvantages and revitalize the national pulse.

Wei Yuan is a progressive thinker, historian and patriotic scholar who resolutely opposes foreign aggression. He actively urged the Qing government to carry out reforms, emphasizing: "There are countless laws that have been harmful for hundreds of years, and there are infinite laws that can benefit and avoid disadvantages, and they are not easy to simplify and be flexible." He focused on the reform in the economic field. Before and after the Opium War, he put forward some plans and measures to reform water conservancy, water transport and salt administration, demanding that the disadvantages be eliminated in order to benefit the national economy and people's livelihood and "the more ancient it is, the more convenient it is". These thoughts not only had progressive significance at that time, but also played a positive role in promoting the later bourgeois reform and reform movement.
