The brave know justice in peace, and the wise will be merciful.

Writing background:
In the ninth year of Wude in Tang Gaozu (626), Li and Li Yuanji attempted to kill unsuccessfully and were framed as. Upon hearing this, Tang Gaozu planned to punish Li Shimin. It was only after Xiaoyu's persuasion that he gave up the idea of punishing him. Soon, Li Shimin killed Li and Li Yuanji in the "Xuanwumen Change". Xiao Yu persuaded Tang Gaozu to hand over power to Li Shimin. In 627 AD, Li Shimin ascended the throne and made Xiao Yu the prime minister. However, because Xiao Yu was outspoken and couldn't get along with Fang and other ministers, she changed Xiao Yu's feelings into a teacher of Prince Edward. Xiao Yu came to the East Palace as a counselor without complaint, and she was very conscientious. Li Shimin was very satisfied with his teaching to the prince. In the ninth year of Zhenguan (653), Xiao Yu was named "Special Advancement" and presented with this poem. He also said, "You are loyal and straightforward, while the ancients are righteous."
