A native of Kaiping, Guangdong, now living in the United States
Pan Yuchuan, a famous photographer and artist, has held many art and photography exhibitions at home and abroad. In March 2001, he planned and launched the "Cat-like City" behavioral photography, aiming to awaken people's awareness of keeping the city clean and protecting their homes. In October 2003, he organized and planned the "Lingnan Modern Art Exhibition", which contributed to the construction of the Lingnan Contemporary Art Palace. His conceptual photography works ("Bottle Series", "Barbie Series", etc.) use props such as mirrors, bottles, and Barbie to transform plain human bodies and landscapes into mysterious and vast imaginative spaces, which are highly experimental and shocking. .
Graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree
Currently a member of the Guangdong Artists Association, the executive director of the Guangdong Young Artists Association, and an artist in Guangzhou Association Director
Pan Yuchuan placed the Barbie doll, which represents the changing fashion of the times, in fishing ports, dilapidated streets and other environments that are far away from the context of the times, showing a culturally selected alienation and absurd artistic conception. "A kind of mental state of a person, a mental fantasy in the subconscious, is just a feeling, a transmission of desire, and the interaction between dreams and reality, because sometimes if we want it, we will indeed be chaotic and fall into reality inexplicably. In a certain vortex of existence, we actually long for a simple life, a simple world, as quiet as heaven." From a personal perspective, Mr. Pan Yuchuan completely demonstrated his simple creative process through visual research and artistic comprehensive expression. This time we present to you photographic works with a certain depth of thinking and level, comprehensively sort out the significance of visual direction and artistic expression restoration in the practical application of artistic creation, and add new connotations to the academic study of photography.
Cheng Weixin photographed the breath of low places in the city. His works reflect the extension and continuity of life, and the soul of human longing and desire. It expresses the intricate relationship between people and reveals the facts hidden by the superficial world. Cheng Weixin's "Narrative of Traces" series, "Searching for Symbols" series, "FACE&FACE" series, "Under the Same Sky" series, "State of Things" series and Yue Opera characters, etc., he uses photography to express his ideas and opinions .
"The Shape of Objects" still gives people a self-monologue. It is too entangled in the elaboration of form and the far-fetched connection between objects, so dramatic stage effects and masks are inevitable. The expression and real torso leave limited room for the viewer to think. "Under the Same Sky" has a different artistic vision. The virtual protagonist may be any one of all living beings, or it may be the artist himself. Why does a person floating alone have a dancing-like posture? Why does the suspended bald child show a sweet expression? In fact, this is a carefully arranged visual trap. When we are surprised in this boundless thinking, we are undoubtedly paralyzed and attracted by this hypothesis. However, you can't help but be intoxicated in this fairy tale world with blue sky and elegant white clouds. At the same time, there will be a strong tension and uneasiness following behind. The strong buildings and the steel like knife-tips lie across the picture, serving as both a foil and a protagonist. In such an environment, the body is likely to encounter many kinds of plots, and there is no time to mourn for oneself, but it is inevitable. Does he imply that in the fair environment of contemporary society, exposed individuals are free and full of possibilities for harm to others? ---Liu Yuan
"Pan Yuchuan Conceptual Photography Exhibition"
(A passage from the artist)
My conceptual photography works are to explore various possible means of photography Very expressive method.
In addition, my sensitivity to patterns and my understanding of art history have influenced my photography art practice. Currently, this method can be said to be a creation that combines the characteristics of conceptual behavior and installation art. I am trying to make a breakthrough in traditional photography creation, and I also want to explore Abstract photography in distress transforms the possibilities from traditional to contemporary. Not only do I have crazy ideas, but I can also find symbols that convey madness and surprise viewers through wonderful patterns. To put it simply, we are taking pictures with our brains and recording our thoughts through photography.
From a series of my works, the ideas conveyed are distilled into three themes: the individual living conditions affected by the city, the conflict and integration of cultures, the opposition, transformation and endless reproduction of life and nature. In the processing of schematics, human behavior intervenes, moves, and rearranges the subject to strengthen its symbolic meaning as a symbol. At the same time, the subject and the background are separated or dissociated, forming a space where life meets or collides, and highlights the visual The tension, post-processing pursues the visual effect, which is a metaphor for the exuberance of vitality and the deviation of the will of life from the laws of the universe.
From the selection of materials to the choice of behavioral methods, I aim to make conceptual photography have a strong impact, direct but not simple. (Information source: Shiyi.com)
Following the 2009 Chinese Conceptual Photography Exhibition, the 2010 Guangzhou Experimental Photography Exhibition, and the 2010 Guangzhou Taikoocang Contemporary Art Exhibition, Pan Yuchuan, a teacher at the School of Art and Media of Guangdong Lingnan Vocational and Technical College Once again broke into the public eye. On July 3, 2010, the "Experimental Photography Works Series Exhibition of Guangdong College Students" hosted by Pan Yuchuan was held at the Guangzhou International Art Space Station in Xiaozhou Village. This series of exhibitions is "tailored specifically for students and is non-profit-making." Pan Yuchuan said that the first exhibition is the photography works of five students from Lingnan Vocational College. He hopes that through our platform, more new people can communicate with each other and improve.
Looking back at the past, Pan Yuchuan, who was in his prime, was very shocking in his photography. In December 1998, Pan Yuchuan planned and held the country's first "Experimental Human Photography Exhibition" in Guangzhou, organizing a group of photographers to take pictures of the human body among the clear mountains and green waters. Public opinion has mixed praise and criticism for this deviant art, and some people simply dubbed Pan Yuchuan a "nature photography artist."
Subsequently, the body photography exhibition broke the news again. A model cried to the media and complained that the large-scale release of the photos caused trouble to her personal life, and questioned Pan Yuchuan and other photographers for breach of contract and using nude photos for commercial purposes. Next, of course, Pan Yuchuan came forward to explain the relevant contract issues to the media. Amid the turmoil, Pan Yuchuan's identity as a photographer was gradually obscured and he became a news figure.
In 2001, he once again gave the public direct access to his madness, but this time he rationally shifted attention to his photography. First, the "New Human Cartoon Generation 4th Virtual Art Exhibition" was launched, then the performance art photography "Cat-like City", and then the climax: the series of group photos "Barbie Doll" and "Bottle".
The composition of the group photo "Barbie" is actually very simple, with only two elements: Barbie and lotus. These are two very pure and beautiful things, but in Pan Yuchuan's photos, these two elements After the elements met, they produced a coquettish and strange charm.
In the "Bottle" series, Pan Yuchuan placed photos of beautiful women in bottles, implying that people are always shackled by bottles of one kind or another. As a result, the faces of beautiful women shackled become ugly and strange. After seeing this set of photos, the reporter has only one feeling: freedom. Only freedom is the most beautiful. Pan Yuchuan always carries a backpack on his shoulders. He is thin and capable and looks like a young man. It is said that the secret to a man's appearance is passion and fantastic imagination. Pan Yuchuan may be able to confirm this statement.
Pan Yuchuan said that he liked taking photos when he was in college. At that time, he studied traditional Chinese painting. The subtle spirit of ink and wash cultivated his unique aesthetic vision and enriched the foundation of his photographic works. Gradually moving from spontaneity to consciousness, Pan Yuchuan began to look for some kind of commonality in the artistic spirit between Western photography and Chinese painting. After graduation, he did not become a painter. Instead, he worked as a photojournalist in a newspaper and took a large number of news photos. In December 1989, he went to Australia to study photography. The purpose is not to make money and get a degree, but to regard studying abroad as a necessary cultural path. "In a foreign country, when I looked back at the Chinese culture I had been immersed in for many years, I gained a clearer understanding." Moreover, it also made him realize a unique black and white creative method.
Pan Yuchuan said: “I don’t know the true face of Mount Lu just because I am in this mountain.
We all have this experience. When we look at something from a distance, we can only come to two conclusions: black and white. But when we get closer, we realize that black and white are so complicated and that there are many colors. Chinese painting uses a very simple way of black and white to express the colorful world. "Pan Yuchuan said that for a long time he only used an ultra-wide-angle lens to take pictures. The pictures taken by this ultra-wide-angle lens have a deformed visual effect. What Pan Yuchuan values ????more is the sense of distance from the person being photographed. The existence of this sense of distance brings about An observation angle close to the spirit of ink painting. In 1993, Pan Yuchuan returned to Guangzhou and served as a visiting lecturer in the Fine Arts Department of South China University of Literature and Art. At the same time, he entered a vigorous creative stage. Unfortunately, few people were in the mood to go to Guangzhou in the 1990s. Appreciate art, let alone understand the ink spirit that Pan Yuchuan realized from traditional Chinese painting. Although he has been in the stage of being unapplauded for a long time, Pan Yuchuan has observed the wonderful contemporary world scene after scene from behind the ultra-wide-angle lens.
This state of the world is a state of the world that has never appeared in Chinese history under the conditions of market economy. The traditional ink painting spirit seems a bit weak to express it. In comparison, Western art styles seem to be better able to control it.
In the late 1990s, Pan Yuchuan found a new feeling in performance art. He discovered that the essence of performance art is extreme symbolic consciousness. Therefore, symbols and ultra-wide-angle lenses created Pan Yuchuan's conceptual photography.
Regarding conceptual photography, Pan Yuchuan said: “It is a very extreme expression of exploring various possible means of photography. I was originally a painter, and my sensitivity to patterns and understanding of art history have influenced my photography practice. The current method can be said to be a creation that combines the characteristics of conceptual behavior and installation art. I am trying to make a breakthrough in traditional photography creation, and also want to explore the possibility of transforming abstract photography from traditional to contemporary when it is in trouble. "
Pan Yuchuan's photography is not random, but premeditated. He proudly said: "I took the photos only after I had a good idea.
