Experiences, reflections and techniques of oil painting creation

Oil painting creation experience

(Liu Bo, Department of Fine Arts, Mianyang Art Institute, Sichuan Province, December 7, 2007)

On the road of artistic creation, explore suitable It’s self-evident that you have your own distinctive style. I often think that I am interested in making a bold attempt in my own professional creation. I think about some issues from time to time. After careful preparation, I find that I am still denied by myself. Then I continue to adjust and revise, and then explore again. , I repeat this process, and I look back at the few paintings I have created. The themes are mostly taken from common scenes in rural areas in northern Shaanxi. In my memory, I often finish my paintings with strong interest and passion. In fact, in the process of painting, I often think about it while painting. Based on a shape or a color, I am inspired to create another piece of color or a more interesting shape, which constantly enriches and enriches the picture. I don't often use this kind of experiment in my creations. Of course, the general situation is to think of the basic plan first, and then the physical matching basically conforms to my idea, and then I start writing. In fact, the process of a work is more important than the result. The process emphasizes feelings. Without feelings, the picture cannot impress the viewer. The author believes that as a creation, you must first impress yourself.

Last winter, I returned to northern Shaanxi, to my hometown where I was born and raised. It is generally believed that there are no more manifestations of modern civilization here, there are no so-called high-rise buildings, there are all loess and cave dwellings, and life is simple and monotonous. However, it is precisely in these unadvanced lives that the image of And the colors they present constitute the unique beauty of the loess in northern Shaanxi. The empty loess of the plateau, the changeable scenery, the simple and honest men of northern Shaanxi, and the unique folk songs of northern Shaanxi make people sigh with emotion. With sincere interest and excitement, I painted a number of works. Every year my home is changing, and the things I recorded are disappearing. People are getting richer, and the place is undergoing great changes.

The current topic is creation. In creation, the beauty in life is often very attractive. Every painter will have a certain preference for life. There are many ways to form this preference. reason. In addition to the possibilities provided by objective conditions, the painter's emotions and the ability to feel formed by various accomplishments are also important factors. Preferences and expressions also vary from person to person. From the moment I graduated and started working, I began to consciously absorb nutrients from our national culture in my artistic creation. The question of whether foreign localization and local modernization should become Chinese oil paintings has been a long-standing issue. In fact, debate is far less practical than practice.

I once wanted to learn something from foreign art. The colors are purer and many decorative expression techniques are used. I used lighter and weak contrast in colors to emphasize the composition of the picture. Later, I saw the creative motivation in the freehand Chinese painting. The charm of the freehand Chinese painting and the understanding and processing of shapes were very interesting and moved me. The painting process of this kind of freehand landscape painting feels that they have a thorough understanding of the form and spirit of the object they are depicting. When writing, it is not a process from scratch as seen on the surface, but a confident plan, and then the pen is completed. Write God in form. Each part is organically connected and obeys the requirements of a general charm and rhythm. Under this general requirement, I painted some Chinese landscape paintings, and then created oil paintings. Each stroke is a pen and ink, and it is also a part of the form. If oil painting can absorb this technique and combine it with the color modeling of oil painting, a new look may appear, that's all.

Making a lot of paintings continuously is very beneficial to my practice. Keep drawing, keep thinking, adjust your ideas at any time, add some new ideas at any time, and experiment at any time. First of all, carefully consider the small sketch of the sketch, and consider the composition, black and white, and color composition of the picture. After knowing all of this, I will be bold and proactive in moving the oil painting brush. This time's landscape oil paintings "In Front and Behind the House", "Mountain Singing in the Zee", and "People on the Plateau" are such experimental works.

In order to make the objects of the painting more simple and rough, I used large brush strokes to express some rhythmic strokes, and used colors to seek changes in unity. Most of the objects represented were common life scenes in rural areas. , and the unique Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi to express this local flavor.

These attempts are the experience of creating oil paintings in my spare time from teaching. They are the continuation of my exploration and study of oil painting since I graduated from college. I am willing to continue to draw inspiration from life and continue to explore.

Oil painting is a type of painting introduced from the West. After being introduced to China, it has developed its own national characteristics and cultural traditions. Oil painting creation requires strong professionalism and academic content, especially figurative realistic painting, including strict shape, volume shaping, color matching, edge line processing, texture perspective, anatomy, layering issues, rhythm, rhythm, etc. In this process It is no longer just a simple reproduction of nature, but also needs to be refined and brewed subjectively to give gray a rich, tranquil, elegant and noble appearance, with a transparent color effect, and to integrate everything into a clear and warm tone. , in the process of painting, we strive to express the emotions of the characters, so that people can experience a potential poetry and artistic accomplishment from the East, filter out the impurities in our consciousness with a sense of imminent reality, and become a pure contemplation. The pursuit of overall style presents a "spiritual" aesthetic connotation.

The language of painting reflects life and the author’s opinions and attitudes towards life based on his or her own worldview and aesthetics. The author must improve his professional accomplishments in painting. Each art category has its own artistic language and organizational structure. The artistic language of painting is color, line, surface, light and shade, etc. The first thing involved in oil painting creation is composition. The so-called composition is the "operating position." The Fauvist painter Matisse talked about composition like this: Composition is when the painter uses various decorative methods to express his feelings. Art arranged with the painter's intention. Whether you are painting a portrait or a scene, there are composition problems. All schools of Western modern art are no exception. From the perspective of formal beauty, composition is divided into symmetrical and asymmetrical. No matter which type, it must have a sense of rhythm. Everything in nature has its own rhythm, which is the main basis for our perception of things, and usually has certain rules: Horizontal It gives people an impression of ease, peace and tranquility, while diagonal lines give a sense of intense movement and instability, while triangular compositions give a sense of stability and security.

Painting style is the artist’s artistic outlook. The formation of a special style is inseparable from the author’s own temperament and cultivation. The national character of art is the artistic characteristics formed by expressing the essential characteristics of the nation. The national character of art lies in whether the artistic work expresses the national spirit. The national spirit is the core and soul of national art. The art of a nation is the external expression of the soul of a nation. It displays the soul of the country to the world in a visible and tangible form.

As the subject of the painting, the author himself must work hard to promote social progress and improve the national spiritual and aesthetic quality. First of all, we must improve our own cultivation, which is to further improve our artistic theoretical cultivation and artistic creation skills on the basis of obtaining certain basic knowledge and certain artistic practice, so as to reach a certain height and level, and skillfully and freely create works with certain artistic qualities. A work of art with meaning. We must improve our self-cultivation from the following aspects: First, we must have a progressive worldview and aesthetic ideals. An advanced worldview determines the correct purpose and motivation of creation, and affects the style and taste of works; scientific aesthetics enable us to correctly Grasp the standards of artistic aesthetics and pursue a higher and more ideal artistic realm; you must also accumulate rich cultural qualities. Knowledge and literacy can help artists improve their creative realm as a whole. Cultural literacy directly affects artistic expression; rich life accumulation is Basic materials and prerequisites for artistic creation. Extraordinary artistic thinking ability as well as superb artistic skills and expression abilities must be cultivated in painting creation. Different painting languages ??will reflect different painting styles and styles.

Style is more reflected in the artist's personal life experience and artistic temperament. When using a personalized artistic language, he forms an artistic style that is different from others, while style is the aesthetic character of this personal artistic style, which is the penetration The meaning and sentiment in the work. To judge the "taste and style" of a work, we mainly look at the cultural and aesthetic content of the work that is beneficial and improves people's spiritual quality. A successful artist must have independent aesthetic ideas. Only in this way can he find his own territory and the substantive value of existence on the platform of dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures. No matter what subject matter you choose or what techniques you use in your creation, The most important thing is to express your true feelings through plain vision and stay true to your own painting ideals and lofty aesthetic ideals.

This article believes that any work of art contains factors of generalization and simplification. Whether it can be simplified easily is the standard to measure the quality of an artist. The expression of color can best reflect the artist's emotion, and the color of color can best reflect the artist's emotions. Emotion is realized by intensifying colors and creating specific tones. Style is the result of creation, and imitation is a taboo in forming style.

Oil Painting Experience

Oil painting experience and sketching are the most enjoyable painting state for me, because I can gaze into my soul. I used to rely on photos for painting, but I always felt that there were more artificial elements. Painting based on experience will inevitably form a pattern, and it lacks the calmness to face nature and life. I like the frankness of sketching, and I like to create in front of models. I do not agree with treating sketching as a practice. I am not used to making small drafts before painting big paintings. I am passionate about the direct "confrontation" between emotion and canvas. I am excited about it. The brush and paint express the momentary feeling of the image. It seems a bit mysterious to say "instant feeling", but it is indeed a manifestation of the thinking quality accumulated by an artist in his long artistic life. If this is an artistic concept, then the way to realize it is technique. In today's Chinese era that ignores the value of skills and coexists with the value of skills, how to understand European traditions and grasp real life, and whether the skills themselves have the possibility to continue to expand, I think it depends on the artist's spiritual perception of nature and life. Studying in the advanced oil painting class of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and receiving careful guidance from the gentlemen can be said to have benefited a lot. Perhaps what we heard was just repeated teachings. Although the truth is not difficult to understand, it takes practice and time to truly understand it. of. I am a person with a rebellious mentality. The good side is that I do not blindly follow the trend and stick to myself. The bad side is that I cannot correct problems in time. What makes me most frustrated is that the works I once thought were self-righteous suddenly one day seemed ridiculous. Therefore, I often regret the time that has passed, as if I were facing a great disaster. However, I firmly believe in the principle of "a blessing in disguise", and it is obvious that I have made progress. It is quite daunting to look up at the works of European masters. There is no doubt that they have been the standard of European oil painting art for hundreds of years. While we admire the technical beauty of the masters' works, we should also understand the spiritual and emotional devotion of the masters to the era in which they lived. , how they experience nature with their hearts. It is said that women are not allowed to participate in Tibetan thangka paintings. This is a spiritual and cultural will. When we study the works of masters, we often put ourselves in unfamiliar alien situations, so learning is relatively passive. In fact, we often feel that there seems to be some similarity between European oil paintings and Chinese art, which gives us a sense of psychological closeness. For example, Botticelli, Holbein, etc., the sense of closeness is heart-pounding. This is undoubtedly a cultural and psychological communication. Perhaps if we can understand the art of oil painting from the perspective of our own national culture, it may reduce psychological barriers. For example, realism in Western art is called portraiture in our tradition. "Reality" is more psychological and humanistic than "reality". For another example, it will be easier to understand the expression of brush strokes in oil paintings by using the artistic conception of brush and ink in Chinese painting. We have no reason to doubt our own wisdom. What is missing is probably spirit and belief. However, oil painting art is a foreign form after all. When we learn oil painting, we must understand the beauty of oil painting.

As Mr. Jin Shangyi said: "Coming to the Academy of Fine Arts to study is to let you know what the highest standard of European oil painting is." The highest standard of oil painting is "whole, general and exquisite". This standard is not only the standard of oil painting, but also the standard of all oil paintings. The standard of art; what measures it is not technique, but cultivation. Perhaps we fall into a helpless predicament in language because we advocate this standard, but it is definitely not because we are wrong about pursuing standards, but because we are wrong about the way of thinking that follows the same trend. Any technique without cultural will and spiritual devotion will degenerate the oil painting, and degenerate painting escapes the times. Doing anything requires the control of spirit and will. In art learning, some people regard skills and rules as the bible. They think that as long as they follow the rules, the road will be smooth. In fact, this is a great blindness. We know that the first step in fighting a war is to inspire the fighting spirit of soldiers. If we only rely on the power of swords and guns in our hands, there will be no victory for the Chinese revolution. The reason why art is great is that it cannot occur naturally. Art is the product of human spirit and will, and painting is "an act of God."
