At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, when the Central Plains was in turmoil, Zhang Zhao fled to the south of the Yangtze River with other refugees, and was highly valued by Sun Ce. The official worshipped Chang Shi and Fu Jun's corps commander, and went to the church with him to meet Zhang Zhao's mother, just like a close friend of his peers. Almost all the important affairs in Sun Ce's territory were handled by Zhang Zhao, who made great contributions to Sun Ce's leveling of Jiangdong. Therefore, he was deeply respected by the northern literati, and there were many words praising Zhang Zhao in their letters. Instead of suspecting this, Sun Ce said smartly: "In those days, Guan Zhong was the prime minister of Qi, Qi Huangong opened his mouth to Guanzhong and kept his mouth shut to Guanzhong, while he dominated the vassals and was respected by the whole world. Now that Zi Bu is wise, I can reuse him. Isn't his fame all mine? " This shows that Zhang Zhao's position in Sun Ce's heart is as important as Guan Zhong's position in Qi Huangong's heart.
At that time, Liu Biao wanted to write a letter to Sun Ce in person, and show it to Mi Heng first. After reading it, Mi Heng sneered at Liu Biao and said, "Do you want the children under Sun Ce's account to read it like this, or do you want Zhang Zibu to see it?" Thus, even Mi Heng, who has always been arrogant, agrees with Zhang Zhao's talent.
In the fifth year of Jian 'an (2 years), Sun Ce entrusted his younger brother Sun Quan to Zhang Zhao before he died. Sun Ce told Zhang Zhao, "If Zhong Mou doesn't serve, you'll get it yourself. I can't recover, and I will slowly return to the west, and I have nothing to worry about. " At that time, Sun Quan was young, and Mrs. Wu, Sun Quan's mother, was worried that he would not succeed, so she introduced Zhang Zhao, Dong Xi and others and asked if Jiangdong could be preserved. Dong Xi replied: "The geographical situation of Jiangdong is based on mountains and rivers, but the general who seeks rebellion is a wise state shepherd and has been kind to the people. General Qiu Lu inherited the inheritance, went up and down to Qi Xin to obey orders, Zhang Zhaobing was in charge of major events, and Dong Xi and others were my minions. This is the time when we have the right place and people, and there is nothing to worry about! "
after Sun Ce's death, Zhang Zhao immediately reported to the imperial court, and sent official documents to all the counties, and ordered them to keep their posts for the internal and external distribution schools in Jiangdong. At that time, Sun Quan was very sad. Zhang Zhao advised Sun Quan to say, "As an heir, it is important to inherit the legacy of our ancestors, make it prosperous, and build great achievements. Nowadays, the world is in turmoil, and thieves are on the rise. How can you stay in bed sad and indulge your personal feelings like ordinary people? " He personally helped Sun Quan get on the horse and marched out, and then everyone obeyed Sun Quan.
When Sun Quan first took charge of Jiangdong, because of his unstable foundation, some disaffected people colluded and plotted to rebel. And Zhang Zhao assisted Sun Quan to appease the people, and the local officials and travelers were also reused and settled down. Every time Sun Quan went to war, he left Zhang Zhao to guard the rear and always took charge of the affairs of the government office. Later, the yellow turban insurrectionary party rose up, and Zhang Zhao led the army to make it flat. When Sun Quan levied Hefei, he ordered Zhang Zhao to lead his troops to attack and discuss Kuang Qi. He also ordered Zhang Zhao to take charge of all the generals and break through Yu Zhang, the thief handsome Zhou Feng and others in Nancheng. Since then, Zhang Zhao has rarely led troops and often served as an adviser around Sun Quan.
Sun Quan is especially kind to Zhang Zhao because he is an old minister. Let it be a long history. Zhang Zhao dares to express his opinions in front of Sun Quan, and often accuses Sun Quan of doing something wrong, which has a positive effect on Sun Quan.
In the 12th year of Jian 'an (27), after Gan Ning defected to Sun Quan, he immediately offered a plan to punish Huang Zu, the satrap of Jiangxia. At that time, Zhang Zhao was present and did not agree with Gan Ning's opinion. He said: "Jiangdong itself is in danger. If the army really goes west, I am afraid it will inevitably lead to domestic chaos." Gan Ning retorted rudely: "The country has entrusted you with such an important task as Xiao He, but you stay behind and worry about trouble. What can you use to admire the ancients?" Seeing the dispute between the two men, Sun Quan raised his glass to propose a toast to Gan Ning, and said, "Xingba will go to the west this year, just like this cup of wine, I decided to give it to you. Although you struggled to put forward the operational strategy, we will certainly defeat Huang Zu, so you have made great contributions. Why care about Zhang Changshi's words? " In the 14th year of Jian 'an (29), Liu Bei named Sun Quan as the general of riding a car and Zhang Zhao as the military adviser. Every time Sun Quan hunts, he often shoots tigers on horseback, and tigers often jump forward into the saddle. Zhang Zhao changed his face and said, "What do you use to resist it? A gentleman should be able to control heroes and drive a group of wise men. Can he chase after Yuan Ye and be brave in beasts? If there is a good thing, I am not afraid of being laughed at by the world? " Sun Quan apologized to Zhang Zhao: "It's not far away to worry about things when you are young. It's shameful to you." But I still can't control myself, so I made a tiger-shooting car. There is no cover in the car, and one person drives it and shoots animals by himself. At that time, some wild animals jumped on his car, but Sun Quan took pleasure in fighting with his own hands every time. Despite Zhang Zhao's bitter remonstrance, Sun Quan often just laughed.
in the seventeenth year of Jian' an (212), Ruan Yu wrote in "A Letter to Cao Gong and Sun Quan": "If we can take the cloth from inside and attack Liu Bei from outside, we can be sincere and make good use of it, then we will be calm and impressive." At that time, Zhou Yu had died, while Liu Bei was in Shu and Cao Cao was in ruxu. At this time, Ruan Yu, as the mouthpiece of Cao Cao, wrote this letter to win over Sun Quan with the bait hides the hook, but the two people that Sun Quan wanted to get rid of in this letter were Liu Bei and Zhang Zhao.
in the second year of Huang Chu (221), Xing Zhen, the envoy of Wei Wendi and Cao Pi, made Sun Quan king of Wu. Introduction to chastity, don't get off. Zhang Zhao said to Xing Zhen, "Etiquette is not disrespectful, so the law does not fail to implement it. And you dare to be arrogant. Do you think that Jiangdong is weak and doesn't even have a knife for law enforcement? " Xing Zhen hurriedly get off. Later, Zhang Zhao was appointed as General Suiyuan, and was given the title of Boxing Hou.
Soon after, Zhang Zhao, Sun Shao, Teng Yin, Zheng Li and others, according to the system of Zhou Dynasty and Han Dynasty, wrote the ceremony of coming to the DPRK.
Later, when Sun Quan sent an envoy to Wei again, he mentioned that Sun Shao and Zhang Zhao would be sent to serve as hostages with his son Sun Deng, so Cao Pi believed Sun Quan. Thus, even after Battle of Red Cliffs, Zhang Zhao still has great influence in many aspects, such as prestige and status.
When Sun Quan was in Wuchang, he got drunk on the fishing platform, and people sprinkled water on his ministers and said, "Today, you can't stop drinking until you get drunk and fall into the water." Zhang Zhao said nothing seriously and went out to sit in the car. Sun Quan sent someone to call Zhang Zhaohuan and said to him, "Why are you angry when everyone is happy together?" Zhang Zhao replied: "In the past, Zhou Wang used to have a banquet in the bad hill wine pool for one night. At that time, I thought it was just fun, and I didn't think there was anything wrong." Sun Quan was silent and ashamed, so he stopped drinking.
However, when Sun Quan set up the Prime Minister, many people nominated Zhang Zhaolai for the post, but Sun Quan said, "There are many things now, and the Prime Minister has a heavy responsibility. This is not a measure to honor him." So Sun Shao was appointed Prime Minister. After Sun Shao's death, everyone proposed that Zhang Zhao should be the prime minister. Only then did Sun Quan tell part of the real reason: "How can I be stingy with Subu? Just considering that the affairs of the prime minister are complicated and he is strong-willed, if his words are not followed and adopted, there will be resentment and difficulties, which will not be beneficial to him." So he appointed Gu Yong as Prime Minister.
in the first year of Huanglong (229 years), rising of sun was the top official of the conference, which was attributed to Zhou Yu. Zhang Zhao raised his glass to praise his merits, but before he could say it, Sun Quan said, "If I had listened to Zhang Gong, I would have to beg for food now." Zhang Zhao was so ashamed that he fell on the ground and sweated (Wang Chan, quoted in The Collection of the Three Kingdoms, said that Sun Quan had always feared Zhang Zhao, and it was unlikely that he would say so, while Zhang Zhao was upright and upright, and he would not sweat because of one sentence; However, Lu Bi is opposed to Wang Chan's theory. Soon, Zhang Zhao said that Lao abdicated and handed over his subordinate, and was replaced by General Wu, whose position was second only to that of Sangong (the Prime Minister), and he was renamed Louhou, a food city and a household. He retired and wrote notes for Zuo Zhuan and The Analects of Confucius.
every time Zhang Zhao appeared before the court, his words were strong and vigorous, and his meaning was apparent. He once refused to see him because he spoke out against his will. Later, the emissary of Shu Han arrived and praised his country's good deeds. None of the ministers could make him yield. Sun Quan sighed, "If Zhang Gong is sitting, he will scratch if he doesn't yield. How can he boast!" The next day, I sent a messenger to ask if I wanted to see Zhang Zhao. After Zhang Zhao arrived, he excused himself and apologized. Sun Quan knelt down to stop him. After Zhang Zhao sat down, he looked up and said, "At the beginning, the Queen Mother (referring to Mrs. Wu of Sun Jian) and King Huan (referring to Sun Ce) did not give your old minister to you, but gave you your old minister, so I tried my best to repay great kindness, but I was short-sighted and went against your majesty's divine will. I thought that the remains would be discarded in the ravine forever after my death, but I was summoned again to serve your majesty in the court. However, my foolish heart is used to serve the country, and I am determined to be faithful until I die. It is absolutely impossible for me to change my mind in order to win the honor of the world and the favor of your majesty! " Sun Quan apologized to him for this.
in October of the first year of Jiahe (232), Gongsun Yuan fought against Wei in Liaodong, and surrendered himself to Sun Wu, thinking that it was a foreign response. Zhang Zhao remonstrated: "Gongsun Yuan betrayed Wei and was afraid of its conquest, so he came far for help. This was not his intention. If Gongsun Yuan changes his mind and wants to express himself to Wei, the two messengers will not come back. Won't this make the world laugh? " Sun Quan argued with him repeatedly, and Zhang Zhao's intention of remonstrance became more and more earnest. Sun Quan couldn't stand it. He grabbed a knife and said angrily, "Scholars of the State of Wu worship me when they enter the palace, and worship you when they leave the palace. I respect you to the extreme, but you have humiliated me in public several times, and I am afraid that I will hurt you by mistake." Zhang Zhao looked at Sun Quan for a long time before he said, "Although I know that my words will not be obeyed, the reason why I want to do my best is because when the Queen Mother died, I called the old minister under the bed, and the words that I will take care of my life are still in my ears!" After that, I burst into tears. Sun Quan also threw a knife to the ground and wept with Zhang Zhao.
However, Sun Quan still sent an envoy to Liaodong. Zhang Zhao resented that his words were not adopted, so he retired. Sun Quan, in a rage, ordered Zhang Zhao's house to be sealed with earth to show that he never had to go out. Zhang Zhao also blocked the door from the inside with soil to show that he would never go out. As a result, Gongsun Yuan betrayed Dongwu and killed Zhang Mi and Xu Yan, messengers sent by Sun Quan to Liaodong. At this time, Sun Quan regretted that he sent someone to invite Zhang Zhao to court several times, but he was unwilling to apologize and show weakness. He ordered Zhang Zhao's house to be burned to force him to go out. But this method didn't frighten Zhang Zhao, so Sun Quan had to order the fire to be extinguished again. Finally, Sun Quan couldn't stand in front of Zhang Zhao's house for a long time. Zhang Zhaocai, with the help of his son, went out to reconcile with Sun Quan. Zhang Zhao was well versed in Confucianism. In his later years, he had nothing to do at home, that is, he made notes on Zuo Zhuan and The Analects of Confucius (all lost today). Sun Quan hoped that Prince Sun Deng would be familiar with Hanshu, and ordered his son Zhang Xiu to learn from Zhang Zhao first, and then returned to the palace to teach Sun Deng. Chen Lin, one of the seven sons of Jian 'an, wrote "Wu Ku Fu". After reading it, Hong Zhang wrote a letter praising Chen Lin's literary talent. Chen Lin said that compared with Hong Zhang and Zhang Zhao, they were dwarfed.
The Three Kingdoms also includes his works "On Being Suitable for the Old King" and "Mourning of Tao Qian, the Secretariat of Xuzhou". Zhang Zhaoshan's calligraphy works are now gone. Zhang Huaiguan, a calligrapher in the Tang Dynasty, listed his calligraphy as the third class in Book Evaluation.
