This paper discusses Wang Xizhi's outstanding contribution to the development of calligraphy art in China.
Wang Xizhi plays a connecting role in the history of calligraphy. Its main contributions are as follows: (1) It has opened up the development path of calligraphy combining cursive script with regular script, boldly reformed on the basis of inheriting the essence of previous calligraphy, introduced running script, and perfectly combined the practicality and artistry of calligraphy. (2) Creating expressive writing methods. He not only mastered a variety of calligraphy styles, but also reformed the traditional procedural brushwork to make it colorful. In practice, we should pay attention to changing the state of the book, expressing different ways and avoiding similarities. Wang Xizhi's calligraphy is a new kind of calligraphy which is free from the repetition of backward, recovery and right turn in the wooden slips and residual notes in Wei and Jin Dynasties, and is suitable for the new book style. Eight sides, dynamic and static forces interweave into interest, which not only maintains balance but also gives people an unpredictable feeling. Influenced by official script, the shape of calligraphy has always been horizontal, while Wang Xizhi's calligraphy emphasizes vertical change and its shape is slightly elongated. This change became the general trend at that time, but it was the achievement of Wang Xizhi and the people around him.
