If you want to learn brush calligraphy, how can you get started without foundation?

First, it's best to choose the original tablet with big and clear words, because although the red ones look clearer, they have all been repaired, losing the charm of the original in a sense and the font details are not clear.

Secondly, if learning calligraphy begins with regular script, it is suggested to start with facial makeup, and recommend "Jingjinbei" and "Many Pagodas"; After practice, I will turn to Liu Ti (if I like Liu Ti). As the saying goes, "Yan Liu Jin Gu", Liu Ti was founded on the basis of Yan style and incorporated into his own style. Liu Ti recommended the mysterious tower and the monument to General Ce Shen. I have a teacher who has a very apt metaphor: he said that Yan Ti is like a piece of wood, Liu Ti is like wood sawed from wood, and Ou Ti is like furniture made of wood. Therefore, the steps to practice regular script should be: Yan-Liu-Ou.

Third, beginners choose Langhao and double-line brush as the top brush, and the size depends on their own font size (calligraphy pays attention to writing small characters with big strokes, but small pens can't write big characters), generally medium and large sizes are better. Practice paper uses fringed paper, which is cheap and effective (written on the raw edge).

Fourth, it is best not to paint the paste red, which will lead to dependence. The early suggestion is to paste (that is, to read the copybook and write it yourself), which may be slow, but only in this way can we really grasp the characteristics and style of the font and lay the foundation for the later creation. Memorize words and collect words in the middle and late stage (don't look at the copybook, strengthen your memory by comparing with the copybook after writing, and draw words from the copybook to collect couplets and aphorisms).

Finally, regarding the question of hiring a calligraphy teacher, I personally think it is necessary to find a calligraphy teacher. The premise is that you must have a certain calligraphy foundation. Otherwise, if the calligraphy teacher you are looking for is used to teach you to hold a pen and paint red, why spend money? The role of the calligraphy teacher is to pave the way for your later period and guide your creation, not to teach you to persist.

These are my personal views (I am now a Chinese painting major, and calligraphy and painting are in the same strain, so I started calligraphy and Chinese painting at the same time). After reading the answer upstairs, I feel sorry for what I said wrong.
