Dujiangyan South Bridge is located outside the south gate of Dujiangyan City, across the Neijiang River. Before the bridge was built, pedestrians were blocked by it, making it very inconvenient to travel. In the fourth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1878), Sichuan Governor Ding Baozhen overhauled the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. After the repairs were completed, Ding Baozhen opened the treasury and granary and took a look. There was a surplus of money and grain, and there was about more than ten thousand taels of silver. What to do with this money? Ding Baozhen fell into deep thought. He may have thought about using the manuscript to reward the officers and soldiers who had contributed to the repair. He may also have thought about using it to repair the slightly dilapidated official residence, but in the end he chose to build a bridge and spend 10,000 taels of silver to communicate. The civilization on both sides of the Neijiang River. A year later, a "Tongji Bridge" with a wooden structure, tile roofs, and cornices was built on the Neijiang River. Tongji Bridge has "wild goose teeth flying in the sky, pointing directly to the guide road", so people call it "South Bridge". From then on, pedestrians going south and north had a stable road. When crossing the bridge, they always took a deep look at the rushing river, and then gently called a person's name.
In 1958, a flash flood occurred in Mianjiang River, and driftwood blocked the bridge opening and destroyed the bridge body. It was later rebuilt by the Forestry Engineering Bureau and the Minjiang Water Transport Department, and the wooden bridge piles were replaced with concrete piers, and the name was officially changed to " South Bridge". During the Cultural Revolution, the Four Olds were destroyed and the bridge was damaged. It was rebuilt in 1979. After completion, it became the ancient covered bridge-style scenic bridge that combines reinforced concrete skeleton and wooden structure. Today's South Bridge has 5 holes, 54 meters long and 12 meters wide. It has 3 overlapping eaves and is covered with glazed tiles. The double eaves of the bridge are decorated with colorful sculptures of rare birds and animals as well as various folklore and drama characters, with different moods and lifelike features. There are calligraphy couplets on the columns of the bridge pavilions at both ends, and there are exquisitely painted landscapes, myths and legends murals on the inner walls of the left and right corridors, as well as 34 calligraphy couplets. Stanley's red sills, painted pillars and carved beams make the entire bridge an art gallery that combines poetry, calligraphy and painting. The practicality and artistry of the South Bridge are perfectly unified. Today, Dujiangyan's traffic extends in all directions, and the role of South Bridge as an important thoroughfare has been diminished. In summer, there are still many people taking a nap and enjoying the cool air on the South Bridge. They mostly bend their erect spines to form a bridge for us in memory of a parent.
