Interpretation of Wang Yumin and his flower-and-bird paintings

Author: Lu Yun of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts.

That summer, I went to Qinhuangdao to attend the opening ceremony of "Pen and Ink in Contemporary China 2005 Invitational Exhibition". Luckily, I met Mr Wang Yumin again. I can't remember him at the moment. When he told me to study in Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, he was full of gratitude. Especially when I saw the "When is the bright moon, and the four seas meet old friends" presented by the old secretary, Mr. Gao Jingming, I felt cordial. At this moment, it suddenly occurred to me that his "Moon Tower at Sea" might be related to this.

In recent years, I have met with Yumin more, and I have a deep impression. Simplicity, enthusiasm, frankness, peace, humility and politeness should be his business cards, and that kind of loyalty has won the favor of people in the industry. Especially in his works, whether it is a flower, a bird, a tree or a stone, it reveals a complete, mellow, elegant and quiet natural atmosphere.

It can be seen that in today's materialistic world, in the face of such a noisy world of mortals, Yumin is rare and calm, and devoted himself to exploring tradition, which is also very full in his works. Wang Yumin's flower-and-bird paintings are full of subtle tranquility, and philosophy is higher than general tranquility. In particular, its composition and layout are unique. It makes the whole picture move from danger to justice, which not only has its profound traditional connotation but also has the breath of life in real nature, and can leave people a lot of room for taste and thinking. In particular, his sketches, whether written or written, are meticulous and trustworthy. Clever and natural expression of the author's pastoral feelings and the simplicity and mellow people.

If we compare natural scenery to human beings, and then endow their inner life with human emotions and pen and ink, express people's inner world and convey people's spirit and emotions, this should be the iron law of art and a huge challenge. If we use the contemporary people's feelings about nature, and then use the pen and ink language that contemporary people like, without losing the national things (because the freehand brushwork of flower and bird painting is the most important thing), that is a big problem. It should be said that Wang Yumin is a contemporary who attaches great importance to traditional aesthetics and artistic skills. He has always adhered to the composition that is in line with the spiritual rhythm of contemporary people, and deeply penetrated China's ancient philosophy of "harmony between man and nature" into the spiritual level of contemporary people, which was vividly expressed with his passionate pen and ink. Whether it is his cabbage, radish, pepper and onion, which are common things in our daily life, he can give poetic expression. This is the natural expression of his experience, experience, knowledge and accomplishment. In particular, his efforts to transform the noumenon of life in nature into works of art should be said that his creation in freehand brushwork of flowers and birds is foreseeable.

Wang Yumin is a very diligent and thoughtful freehand brushwork flower-and-bird painter. He also experienced the influence of the Eighth Five-Year Plan and foreign culture on pen and ink. As a traditional freehand flower-and-bird painting, it has made insurmountable achievements from the end of the Song Dynasty to the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and it is obvious from Xu Wei, Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi. What should contemporary people do, and how much space is left for us? Most people are afraid to get involved, just walking around. They take shortcuts and use western painting ideas to deny the cultural connotation and traditional brushwork of freehand flower-and-bird painting, and take novelty, strangeness and uniqueness as the only goal of painting. In some people's eyes, the traditional freehand brushwork of flowers and birds seems to be a dismissive or unattainable threshold. He doesn't know that this is a long-standing problem. But he knows better that China's traditional freehand brushwork of flowers and birds needs someone to inherit and carry forward, and more needs someone to devote himself wholeheartedly. To have comprehensive artistic accomplishment and comprehensive artistic strength is an indispensable part of China culture, not fast food. The highest state of art should be eternal. Therefore, learning national culture, calligraphy, seal cutting, poetry and songs has become his other main goal. Wang Yumin's choice of this road is tantamount to choosing a big problem. He is not vain. He sharpens his sword every ten years, but I believe he has the ability to solve this problem.

His works have advanced by leaps and bounds, and he has created a number of excellent works, which sometimes make people shine. This should be said to benefit from his profound literary foundation and comprehensive knowledge. At the same time, he also has a dull and unassuming heart and a pair of never-ending pursuit steps. As an artist, only by maintaining a strong interest in art, a persistent mentality and sincere feelings for life can we have a high-level spiritual exchange and sublimate the connotation and character of our works. Because of this, we can better transform natural scenery into artificial works of art with emotional feelings.

Chinese painting needs to grasp pen and ink, attach importance to verve and educate artistic conception. As a freehand flower-and-bird painting, it must also inject a kind of "taste". Art is life and literature is love. Without love, life is like an old man who is lonely, helpless, exhausted and uninteresting. The so-called sex lovers can also express their feelings with a flower and a bird. He forgets things when he is fascinated. Look at his eyebrows. By the way, I mentioned Wang Yumin's thought-provoking sentences in his paintings, from which we can appreciate his spiritual connotation, his literary interest and philosophy of life. For example, his painting "Spring Festival Feeling" is entitled "It was unusual at this time, but now it has entered people's homes". The main content is daffodils and firecrackers, supplemented by watermelons and grapes. He showed the strong atmosphere of a prosperous Spring Festival vividly, and the cultural, festive, peaceful and rich atmosphere showed the picture. He wrote in Peach Blossom: "If you are the patron saint of flowers, you must live long." The other said, "You said I was lucky in peach blossoms, and I borrowed them to report spring news. Dongfeng peeping is a bosom friend, I can't write all my feelings "and so on. It not only reflects the relationship between flowers and people, but also shows the relationship between flowers and fruits. It shows the painter's infinite attachment and love for peach blossoms. In his painting "The Rising Sun with Wealth", he wrote, "Ten colors and nine make-ups, leave more fragrance, don't laugh at the old man who is greedy for color and is proud of sunrise". He used a peony with humorous poems, which showed people's deep and restrained feelings and never forgot to be grateful. "Pengque Map" wrote that "the autumn wind passed last night, and Ye Peng entered the painting, leaving the future, which is still good". It is a tribute to life, and it is also a self-portrait of the painter entering the age of no doubt. Although the sentence is plain, it can be seen that it is a handy stroke, which inadvertently reveals his talent and accomplishment. While he was reading paintings, he naturally felt a strong atmosphere of life and reflected simple humanistic feelings. In his works, he praised life, implied upward and eulogized harmony.

In his works, we can also see the lightness of flower-and-bird paintings in Song and Yuan Dynasties, the intellectual interest of teacher Sun Qifeng and the elegance of Mr. Huo Chunyang. The wisdom he showed in China's freehand flower-and-bird paintings is beyond the reach of those who only know how to change with the wind. "The road is long, and I will go up and down." As a teacher and friend, I want to encourage him.
