Fahua Pagoda was founded in the jubilee of the Song Dynasty (1205- 1207). It is said that the name of Jiading branch declined at that time. At that time, people proposed to build a tower at the intersection of Hengli River and Li Anqi River, named Fahua, which implied that people could get the wisdom of Buddha from it and inspire scholars to make progress. When the tower is completed, it is like setting up a giant pen in the city, so Fahua Pagoda is also called "the peak of writing style". After the tower was built, Jiading really became a branch name, and many famous Jiading celebrities appeared in the world. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were 92 champions/kloc-0 in Jiading, including 3 champions, 2 runners-up/kloc-0, and 2 flower explorers. Therefore, pagodas are considered to be the basis of Jiading's literary style.
When the tower was completed, the place where it was located was called "Li Anqi City". Ten years later, Jiading set up a county. This tower is the center of the county building, because it is the highest point of the city, in the center of four streets, east, west, north and south. Sunset over Jinsha is one of the cultural attractions in Jiading. On April 27th, 2002, Fahua Pagoda was announced as a Shanghai cultural relics protection unit.

After several times of prosperity and waste, the damage was particularly serious during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, leaving only the bottom layer relatively complete. In the thirty-sixth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1608), Chen Yiyuan, a magistrate of a county, raised funds to rebuild it, and still restored the seven-story balcony, which was surrounded by pot doors and a brick-wood structure, with a height of 40.83 meters. Each floor had a flat seat, railings and waist eaves, and the cornices between floors were tilted, hanging eaves bells, and the wind bells rang, which was crisp and pleasant. "Sunset in Jinsha" was one of the cultural attractions in Jiading at that time. In the late Ming Dynasty, a calligrapher and one of the four outstanding figures in Jiading inscribed the plaque "Fahua Pagoda". Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing and the Republic of China all had different degrees of repair.
In the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924), Dai Sigong, a citizen, raised funds for overhaul, and changed the verandah on the ground floor, the railings on the waist eaves of each floor and the top of the seventh floor into reinforced concrete building structures.
