On the third day of March in the ninth year of Dongmu Yonghe (AD 353), 41 people, including Wang Xizhi, Xie An and Sun Chuo, were in Lanting (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang), each with his own poems, which were compiled as Preface to Lanting Collection. Wang Xizhi wrote a preface for this purpose, called "Preface to Lanting Collection". The preface narrates the beauty of the landscape around Lanting and the joy of the party, and expresses the author's feelings about the impermanence of life and death. This masterpiece, with 28 lines and 324 words, is perfect in composition, structure and brushwork. This is his masterpiece when he was fifty years old. Later generations commented that "the font of the right army has changed. Its heroism comes from nature, so it is thought that the past serves the present. " Therefore, calligraphers of all ages have praised the Preface to Lanting as "the best running script in the world". In the Tang Dynasty, "Dragon Book" was the most famous ink.

Therefore, Feng Chengsu's golden seal is called Lanting Dragon Book. Because of its fine imitation, its brushwork, pen and ink, style and charm are all top grades. After textual research, Guo Moruo thinks that the second half of Preface to Lanting handed down from ancient times is groundless and has nothing in common with Wang Xizhi's thoughts. The book is different from the epitaph of the king of the Eastern Jin Dynasty unearthed in recent years, and it is suspected that it was forged by Sui and Tang Dynasties. But some people disagree. Preface to Lanting shows the highest realm of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy art, and the author's tolerance, spirit, courage and feelings are fully displayed in this work. The ancients said that Wang Xizhi's "Running Grass" is like "the breeze leaves the sleeve and the bright moon enters my arms", which is a wonderful metaphor. It is also commonly used by people in Cao Zhi's Ode to Luoshen: "Graceful as Youlong, brilliant as Yaoqiu, Song Chun and Hua Mao. It seems as light as a cloud covering the moon, and it seems like the wind returning to snow. " A word praising the beauty of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy. Legend has it that Wang Xizhi practiced calligraphy hard when he was a child. Over time, the pool water used to clean the brush becomes ink.
