How to get started with calligraphy from scratch

How to start calligraphy with zero basic knowledge is as follows:

1. Choose a suitable copybook for copying.

To learn calligraphy, you must first choose a copybook that you are interested in. Generally, you choose to copy the copybook. It is best not to change it. Instead, stick to copying one copybook from the same family. It is best to practice it for a few times. months to years. At the same time, don’t be greedy for too much every time you practice calligraphy. Just practice a few words each time. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a long time each time. It is required that the copying should be as consistent as the original post. You don’t have to innovate and change here, and you can play freely. You should carefully consider the characteristics of each word and engrave each word in your mind before writing.

2. Knot is the foundation of entry-level basics.

The word knot is also called the structure or the frame structure. Mr. Qi Gong once pointed out that when writing calligraphy, one must grasp the frame structure, and second, practice the characteristics of the strokes. The frame structure is more important than the stipple characteristics. If the characters are well spaced, the characteristics of the strokes are not outstanding and they are pleasing to the eye; but the opposite is not true. Therefore, it is very important to carefully study and grasp the structure rules of characters.

As the saying goes, "Beginners learn distribution, but seek fairness." Only when you learn the word "knot" well can you apply the subsequent changes in composition and ink techniques with ease, producing interesting ink rhymes. When learning to write, you should start with regular script or official script. After mastering various calligraphy styles, you will have the foundation to learn other calligraphy styles.

3. Several practical experiences and points to note when starting to practice calligraphy.

1. The posture should be correct, with both feet flat on the ground, hands on the case, shoulders flat, back straight, head upright, and eyes focused on the paper.

2. Hold the pen with the finger pointing firmly and the palm empty. Hold the pen with the fingers and move the pen with the wrist. Start practicing calligraphy with your wrists pillowed, and gradually lift your wrists and hang your wrists.

3. The writing techniques should be clearly distinguished, generally divided into two types: square pen and round pen. It is also necessary to clarify the application positions of center forward, side forward and horizontal forward.

4. Regular script is the basis for learning calligraphy. After learning regular script, I then learned running script, and finally cursive script.
