Mount Putuo, together with Mount Wutai in Shanxi, Mount Emei in Sichuan and Mount Jiuhua in Anhui, is also known as the four famous Buddhist mountains in China, and it is the Dojo where Guanyin Bodhisattva educates all beings. Mount Putuo is one of Zhoushan Islands 1390 islands. It looks like a black dragon lying in the sea, with an area of nearly 1.3 square kilometers. Across the sea from shenjiamen in Zhoushan Archipelago, it is known as the "Buddha Country at Sea" and "Holy Land of the South China Sea". It is the first batch of national key scenic spots.

Mount Putuo is located at the southern edge of Hangzhou Bay, east of Zhoushan Archipelago, with latitude 29 58 ′ 3 ~ 30 02 ′ 3 north and longitude122 21′ 6 ~122 24 ′ 9 east. It is 6.5km from shenjiamen Fishing Port in the southwest, 2.5km from Zhujiajian Island Island in the south and the vast sea in the east.
