Historical Allusions of Guixi
Xiongshi Town is the seat of the Guixi Municipal Government under the jurisdiction of Yingtan City, Jiangxi Province. It is the economic and cultural development center of Guixi City. Xiongshi Town Where does the name come from?
In the east of Guixi City and on the north bank of the Xinjiang River, there is a red sand boulder half submerged in the water. The Xinjiang River came from the east and hit the stone wall. The water flow was blocked, turned slightly south, and then went west again, leaving a treasure land for Guixi that is surrounded by water on three sides. Therefore, old records said that this stone "stands majestically on the flowing water; it is a barrier to the left side of the city." Therefore, it was called "Male Stone"; even Ju Tinghuan, a man from the Qing Dynasty, even wrote a poem praising it: "A stone at the head of the stream looks like a tiger crouching, majestically blocking the east gate. Thousands of villages are surrounded by green trees and clouds, and thousands of miles of torrential waves are swallowing up the sun." It is said that floods over the years have never submerged this stone, so it is called pumice stone. This means that this stone looks like it is floating in water. There is a saying among the people that "a pumice stone cannot float", which should mean that if a pumice stone floats, "the water will cover the golden mountain", and Guixi County will turn into a vast ocean.
Xiongshi, also called Pumice Stone, is located beside the Xinjiang River outside the east gate of the old county. It is said that it will rise and fall with the rise and fall of the water level of the Xinjiang River, acting as a mainstay, protecting the county from flooding. In order to praise its achievements, people called the county town Xiongshi Town.
Why does the male stone float? According to legend, there was a flood during the Dragon Boat Festival, and the water poured into the city. The situation was very dangerous. However, a group of rowing experts still held a dragon boat race in Xinjiang River. The common people in the city and outside the city were not afraid of the high waves and fast currents, and bravely climbed up the city wall to watch and enjoy the scene.
There is a Qinglian Temple by the river. The Bodhisattva in the temple felt very unhappy when he saw the people fighting floods, fighting evil waves, and dragon boat races. The event was much more grand than previous temple fairs. When a new dragon boat with eighteen cabins rowed near the majestic stone in front of the temple gate, it waved its Buddhist broom and set off a row of huge waves on the Xin River, rushing towards the dragon boat. There was only a "crash" sound, and the dragon boat The people and the boat were all drawn into the cave at the bottom of the male stone. Among them, the drummer was very clever. When the bad waves rolled over the boat, he picked up the drum and jumped into the waves, getting rid of the difficulty.
None of the thirty-six sailors who were swept into the cave at the bottom of the male rock drowned, but because of the lack of drummers, they were unable to surface and row again. During the Dragon Boat Festival the next year, the Bodhisattva of Qinglian Temple cast a spell to involve a drummer, making the fully equipped dragon boat come alive again.
Since then, the huge stone Xiongshi has had spiritual energy. It can rise and fall with the rise and fall of floods, and the huge stone itself has never been submerged by floods. It was precisely because the unsinkable boulder floated on the river to block the surging Xinjiang River from invading Guixi County that people began to call it the majestic stone, and Guixi City got its name from this.

The Xinjiang River flows through Guixi City for about 60 kilometers and is called Xiangxi River. It is named after the ancient tulip herb (Xiang Tongxiang) grown in Baimangzhou in the south of the city. This section of the river bank has strange rocks and strange scenery, making it a popular place for climbing and browsing. The popular "Ten Things to Do in Guixi" is a clever summary of these natural beauties.
(1) "Guabang Mountain is not allowed to hang"
Guabang Mountain, also known as Wumianfeng, is located five miles southwest of the city.
"Guixi County Chronicle" records that this mountain has "bird paths and strange rocks. Climbing baskets and hanging knots are often flooded. Looking down at Pyongyang, the battlements are jagged and hidden in the forest." Li Mengyang's poem in the Ming Dynasty said: "North of Donghua Mountain The five-sided stone is so rugged that it has four sides. "Zheng Rikui from the Qing Dynasty praised: "There are many wonderful places in Xinan, and the five-sided stone is the first." Today, you can still see the towering peaks, as steep as a cleft, like hanging in the air, which is inaccessible to people. Climbing, so there is a saying that "hanging on the mountain cannot be done". Xu Xiake, a tourist and geographer of the Ming Dynasty, took a detour to the southeast of the mountain before reaching its peak. According to "Xu Xiake's Travels", the top of Wumian Peak is Foyu Peak. There was a monk temple on the mountainside at that time, and Xiake once took shelter from the rain here. Now the temple is in ruins and only rubble remains. If you follow Xiake's footsteps and climb up to get a bird's-eye view, you can see the Xinshui River flowing across the river and the majestic river bridges. There are four bridges in sequence for more than ten miles up and down, which is very spectacular. Moving to the north of the Yangtze River, the floors are staggered, people walk like ants, and the city streets are all in sight. When visitors come here, they feel as if they are at the end of the river, with the breeze facing their face and the pine waves in their ears. It is really a pleasure after work.
(2) "A line of sky cannot be seen"
Climb the steps south from Wumian Peak, walk a hundred steps through the canyon, and you will reach a line of cave sky. The mountain here is split into two, with a width of only ten meters in between, and two straight walls towering nearly a hundred meters high. It can be said that the characters are inside and the sun is outside. It is really a strange place that cannot be displayed, so there is a saying of "cannot be seen". According to historical records, Wu Mianli of Tang Dynasty built a studio here to study before he became an official. He was known as Mr. Qiangu, so Yixiantian was also called Qiangu Cave. There is a poem written by Zhao Mengzhao of the Yuan Dynasty: "The cave is a fairyland, and the entrance of the cave is a peach garden. How is Wuling Road, where chickens and dogs form their own village." There is a poem in "Wandering a Line of Sky" by Jiang Rujin of the Ming Dynasty that says: "Stone refinement can mend the sky, why?" "Guixi County Chronicles" also praised this cave: "The cave is so steep that it looks like a god setting it up. It is dangerous and quiet. After a long time, you can look up at the empty outline. It’s strange and natural.” Today, people can visit caves in any season, but spring rain and early sunshine are the best. At that time, the mountains and rivers seeped beads, flying in the air, touching the rocks and splashing, thousands of fine droplets appeared, reflecting the light of the eyes and appearing in seven colors, turning into rain and dew and gathering in sweet springs. Wang Qiu, a native of the Ming Dynasty, used the phrase "the sound of drops of liquid from the sky continues" to describe this scene, feeling and sound, which can be regarded as a good sentence. And Xu Xiake even praised it as "one who can be crowned in his life", which shows that the wonders of the cave are not inferior to the famous places in Jiangnan.
(3) "The gold and silver warehouse cannot be opened"
At the foot of the southwest mountain in Xiongshi Town, Guixi City, there is a stone embedded in the wall, with a strict cave door. This is the gold and silver warehouse. According to legend, a stonemason happened to pass by the entrance of the cave and saw gold and silver flowing out of the cave. He was overjoyed. Holding the bag in hand, he thought the amount was small, so he swept the gold and silver back into the cave and moved a stone to block the entrance to prevent others from seeing it. Immediately he ran home, picked up an empty basket and returned to the cave entrance, intending to return with a full load. Unexpectedly, the blocked stone could not be pushed away, as if it had taken root in the ground. The stonemason was so angry that he used his iron drill to cut the stone. Suddenly there was a loud thunder, and the stone turned into a stone door, sealing the entrance of the cave forever, and it cannot be opened to this day. Therefore, there is a saying among the people that "gold and silver warehouses cannot be opened", which is probably a warning to the world not to be too greedy for money.
(4) "The Immortal Bridge cannot be crossed"
Three miles southeast of Guixi City, in the mountains on the south bank of the Xinjiang River, there is a huge stone like a rainbow, which is a natural single-arch stone bridge. It is named Immortal. bridge. A Yueqiaoyan. Looking up from under the bridge, you will see that the bridge's arches are tall and rounded, its beams and columns are square and upright, rising 20 to 30 meters from the ground, and it looks like it was made by man-made masonry. Climb up the cliff from the east of the bridge. The bridge deck is wide and straight, about 50 to 60 meters long, enough to walk with your head held high. However, when you reach the west end, you will find a steep cliff with no steps to go down. Ten meters away from here, there is a stone like a person sitting on the bridge, as if to warn pedestrians. Tourists have no choice but to turn around and go back along the original road. Therefore, there is a folk saying that "the Immortal Bridge cannot be crossed". There were many stone carvings on the stone wall of the bridge body. The inscription "Here are the traces of gods. Have gods come here? The mountain flowers are always smiling, and the wild birds sing." Although it has been peeled off, it is still vaguely identifiable. A poem by Zhao Han of the Yuan Dynasty said: "Where thousands of mountains linger, a graceful cave door opens." Gao Bin of the Ming Dynasty's poem "Ode to the Immortal Bridge" said: "The strange stone is so powerful that it spans it. Who can spare the stone for the Immortal Bridge?" Zhu Yizun of the Qing Dynasty also mentioned this scene in his poem "Guixi". There is a sentence: "A series of mountains are strangely covered with cauldrons, and a single stone suddenly becomes a bridge." It is recorded in the old records: "Looking up from the foothills, the ecology is far away." When Xu Xiake went to the foot of the mountain, he saw an elevated bridge in the mountains. It was very different, so he went there with great interest. His praise was recorded in " "Jiang Youyou's Diary".
(5) "You can't play with a big-bellied Arhat"
The stone man at the west end of the Xianqiao, with his chest and belly raised, sitting cross-legged in meditation, is known as the Big-bellied Arhat. Either because of its Buddhist dignity, it cannot be played with, or because it is a huge thing that cannot be played with, so there is a saying among the people that "the big-bellied Arhat cannot be played with." Whether he respects him like a ghost or a god, or admonishes others with his demeanor, cannot be tested. But in fact, it is indeed difficult to climb up to this Arhat without building a building and climbing a ladder.
(6) "Pumice cannot float"
In the east of Guixi City and on the north bank of the Xinjiang River, there is a red sand boulder half submerged in the water. The Xinjiang River came from the east and hit the stone wall. The water flow was blocked, turned slightly south, and then went west again, leaving a treasure land for Guixi that is surrounded by water on three sides. Therefore, old records said that this stone "stands majestically on the flowing water; it is a barrier on the left side of the city." Ju Tinghuan, a man of the Qing Dynasty, even wrote a poem praising: "A stone at the head of the stream looks like a tiger crouching, majestic and alone blocking the east gate. Thousands of villages are covered with green trees and clouds are locked, and thousands of miles of torrential waves are facing the sun. Swallow it." It is said that this stone has never been submerged by floods over the years, so it is called pumice stone. This means that this stone looks like it is floating in water. There is a saying among the people that "a pumice stone cannot float", which should mean that if a pumice stone floats, "the water will cover the golden mountain", and Guixi County will turn into a vast ocean.
