"Bodhisattva Man·Everyone Says Jiangnan is Good"
Weizhuang of Tang Dynasty
Everyone Says It Jiangnan is good, but tourists only like Jiangnan.
The spring water is as green as the sky, and the boat is painted and listened to the rain to sleep.
The people beside me are like the moon, and my wrists are covered with frost and snow.
Don’t return to your hometown before you are old. Returning to your hometown requires breaking your heart.
2. Translation
Everyone says that Jiangnan is good and tourists should stay there until they grow old. In spring, the river is clear and green, greener than the sky. Visitors can fall asleep listening to the sound of rain on the painted boats.
The woman selling wine in Jiangnan Restaurant is very beautiful. When she sells wine and rolls up her sleeves, her arms are as white as snow. Don't go back to your hometown when you are still young. When you return home, you will be extremely sad.
3. Appreciation
This poem is the second of the "Five Poems of the Bodhisattva" and is a response to the first. Doesn’t the protagonist want to return home? But if you can't seek fame, how can you go back so easily? "Everyone says Jiangnan is good.
Tourists only like Jiangnan." How beautifully written! But this kind of beauty is not enhanced by the beauty of images, but by deep emotions, and the deep emotions that are infiltrated by reason are moving. The beauty of Jiangnan is unparalleled in the world, but how can people who live here and escape the war feel a sense of belonging? Therefore these two sentences are depressing.
"The spring water is as green as the sky. The painted boat sleeps to the sound of the rain." It talks about the green spring water, which is brighter and purer than the sky. How beautiful it is to lie in the boat and fall asleep to the sound of rain. , how ethereal. The melancholy of the first two sentences and the etherealness of the last two sentences form an indescribable artistic tension.
Use Zhuo Wenjun's code secretly. During the Han Dynasty, Sima Xiangru, a native of Shu, eloped with Zhuo Wenjun, the daughter of the wealthy Zhuo Wangsun. Because Zhuo Wangsun announced that he had severed relations with Wenjun, Sima Xiangru ordered Wenjun to be a slave and washed the wine vessels in the street while wearing shorts. Therefore, "The person by the fireside is like the moon. The bright wrists are filled with snow." The stove is the wine cellar, and the person by the fireside refers to his wife, who is the "green window person" in the previous poem.
Why doesn’t the protagonist miss this wife with a face as bright as the moon and a complexion as frosty as snow? But "Don't return to your hometown before you are old. Returning to your hometown requires breaking your heart." The ancients said that not returning to your hometown when you are rich is like walking at night in rich clothes. However, people who have accomplished nothing will only feel more depressed and sad when they return to their hometown.
These two sentences have no artistic skills at all. They are purely based on life experience and emotion and have become famous sentences throughout the ages. Wang Pengyun, a great poet in the late Qing Dynasty, proposed that writing lyrics should conform to the three-character formula of "heavy, large, and clumsy". These two sentences represent the aesthetic realm of "clumsy".
