Only red inkstone is different from it, calling itself "the dreamer".
The dream outside the office is very different, and the rouge inkstone is different.
Only when I heard my daughter's voice did I know that the fat inkstone was Xiangyun.
Zhiyanzhai
Cao Xueqin wrote a book, which was full of ridicule and supercilious look, without any material assistance or spiritual comfort. He was miserable. But he has a close friend who has become his only supporter. This person's name is unknown, leaving only one, called "Zhi Yanzhai". From red inkstone here, Cao Xueqin got assistance and comfort. In Cao Xueqin's situation at that time, there was such a person as Zhifuzhai, which was really commendable, and we could not but admire him. We should pay high tribute to him.
There is a view that greatly underestimates the importance of Zhi Yanzhai and his Review of A Dream of Red Mansions. The main reasons are probably nothing more than: not all of Zhi Yanzhai's views are brilliant and correct, but his criticism of A Dream of Red Mansions is just like Jin Shengtan's criticism of Water Margin; All the first-class things of the old critics, pen and ink games, are mostly dross and have little value at all.
This text can't elaborate on the problem of Zhi Yanzhai's approval of books. But there are a few points to explain: first, it is of course necessary to criticize the choice and correctly evaluate the opinions of novel critics 200 years ago, but this is not the same as ignoring it lightly. Second, the novel criticism school, of course, contains a lot of dross that should be discarded for us, but in general, it is actually a popular form of traditional literary criticism and appreciation that is accessible to the public, and we should give it due attention instead of abandoning it. Third, people like Jin Shengtan are just readers of Water Margin long after its death. In other words, he is a person who has nothing to do with the author of the novel and the creative process, so his criticism of Water Margin can only be within such a "category". But Zhi Yanzhai can't be generalized with Jin Shengtan, because he and the author of A Dream of Red Mansions are both contemporaries and close relatives. He not only has a clear understanding of the creative process of A Dream of Red Mansions, but also is an assistant who participates in writing. Fourth, Jin Shengtan criticized and even tampered with Water Margin from the feudal standpoint and viewpoint, while Zhi Yanzhai sympathized with the author and defended his will and opinions in more aspects, although he could not do all the positions and viewpoints of his collaborators. -I'm afraid such a critic should not compare with Jin Shengtan and others at random. It should be considered that this kind of novel, which has been recognized by critics and has the honor to be handed down and preserved, is extremely valuable research data, which is also a rare special case in the history of ancient and modern literature in the world. We should pay full attention to these meanings.
In this way, we can see the rare place of Zhi Yanzhai: he is the most powerful supporter, inspiration and collaborator in Cao Xueqin's loneliness.
What specific work did he do for Cao Xueqin? What we can see now is:
He decided the title of the book. For example, when he re-evaluated, he finally decided to take Stone as the official title among many synonyms of A Dream of Red Mansions, and with the consent of Cao Xueqin, he wrote the story into the text of the "wedge" part of the frontispiece. In fact, The Dream of Red Mansions, which was first circulated in the Qianlong period, is called The Story of Red inkstone Re-evaluating the Stone.
Secondly, he suggested deleting some main plots in the novel. For example, the original title of the thirteenth draft was "Yin Mourning Tian Xiang Lou", in which it was said that Jia Zhen and Qin's Weng daughter-in-law were raped, caught by the maid, and Qin hanged himself to death. Because of Zhi Yanzhai's suggestion, the matter was clearly deleted and written, so the length of this period was less than the time when he came back. Back eye has also been corrected and taboo.
Third, he revised the contents of the transcript. For example, there is a line in front of Chapter 75 of Geng that reads "the seventh day of May in the 21st year of Qing Qianlong", which is the evidence trace.
Fourth, he sorted out the manuscript, grasped the situation, pointed out the shortcomings at any time, and reminded the author to modify it. For example, in the seventy-fifth chapter of the novel, the theme of the second half is "Appreciation of Mid-Autumn Festival neologisms", but when Baoyu, Jia Lan and Jia Huan were ordered by Jia Zheng to write poems in turn, they only saw the word "Tao is" that caused the poem, but did not see the poem (some "Tao is" was left blank, indicating that there would be words below); It is easy for Zhi Yanzhai to write down the words "Mid-Autumn Festival poetry is lacking, snow Qin" before returning.
Five, such shortcomings, more than one case; Some didn't make up until Xueqin died, but Zhi Yanzhai did. For example, the Mid-Autumn Festival poem mentioned in the last article still has no verse in the later edition, and the word "Tao is" has also been deleted, even the short traces have been eliminated: it can be seen that these three poems have not been supplemented. The 22nd time, "Jia Zheng talks about lantern riddles sadly" only returns to the riddle of Xi Chun. Zhu Piyun wrote on his forehead: "Later, we will make it up again." There is also a single page behind, "temporarily recording" Baochai's riddle text and a seven-character poem, followed by a cloud: "Qin died before this time, sigh!" Then it can be seen that a small fragment made up at the end of this cycle was made up by Chi Yanzhai lamenting that Xueqin was dead.
He not only made up the odds and ends, but also wrote all the missing articles. It turns out that the manuscript of A Dream of Red Mansions has been borrowed by friends for a long time, so that it is sometimes lost. For example, the Twenty-sixth Edition of Geng criticized: "Back to the prison temple, there are a lot of words of peace, but it is a pity that there is no draft, alas!" "It's a pity that Wei's words are lost and there is no manuscript, alas!" Are examples. For example, in Chapter 67, Gao E called "more" in "there is one thing and there is another, but there is no distinction between strictness and reality". The seventh book is actually sixty-one to seventy-eight, and it is marked at the beginning that "sixty-four, sixty-seven chapters are missing." This is the place where Chen Geng Autumn Moon Final Edition (Chen Geng, twenty-five years after Qianlong, when Xueqin was still there) still lacks the whole cycle; But by the end of this period, there have been sixty-four and sixty-seven times. As for the sixty-seven chapters, the researchers believe that they were later forged, and the defects cited are quite reasonable. In fact, this kind of "forgery" is by no means comparable to the forgery of unrelated descendants; Judging from the date and quality of its supplement, it can only be attributed to Zhiyanzhai.
Seven, he mastered the chapters of the manuscript and suggested changing the design. For example, Chapter 17 and Chapter 18 of this edition are still connected in the Chen Geng edition, which is a big book; Before returning home, Zhi Yanzhai wrote: "This return journey should be divided into two parts." Later, this book was divided twice, and the division of each book was different. The person who tried to make a specific decision was Zhi Yanzhai.
Eighth, he annotated the argot and argot in the book. For example, the names of the four sisters in Jiafu, Yuan, Ying, Tan and Xi, are homophonic with the original sigh, and the names of the six "lord protector" sent to the funeral are hidden in twelve places.
Wisdom, etc., unless you are close to the author, it is difficult to understand the original intention. There are many examples, so I won't give you many. The rest, such as "Jinyi", is marked: "Sound barrier, qi zhou also." "Wine Glass" is marked: "The sea of sound is also a big vessel for holding wine." Examples are different.
Nine, he made a "model" for this book, which is listed at the beginning of the volume, and the title is the total poem, which is the seven laws of "every word is like blood, and ten years of hard work is extraordinary". This gives us a deeper understanding of Cao Xueqin's painstaking writing and bleak management.
He commented on the book. From the first draft of the book, he made a batch, until Qin Xue died, he read the notes every two or three years, at least * * * times. These comments are related to Cao Xueqin's creative psychology, generalization and artistic skills. Cao Xueqin and Zhi Yanzhai didn't expect that the comments on these words were later made out of nothing, but appeared in its form from the moment when Zhi Yanzhai's Re-evaluation of the Stone was copied into the world. Forty or fifty years ago in Qianlong, there was never a book with only words and no comments. From this point of view, the nature of the authorized version of A Dream of Red Mansions by Zhi Yanzhai is absolutely different from other novels (such as Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Water Margin, etc.). ). It seems that this meaning has not been paid enough attention.
The above is what we can see on some traces and clues. Besides, what did Zhi Yanzhai do to help? Although unpredictable, I think there are more than the above ten items. Therefore, Zhi Yanzhai is indeed a very important assistant and even collaborator of Cao Xueqin. There is no doubt that the writing of A Dream of Red Mansions contains his labor and achievements.
Cao Xueqin wrote a book in poverty, saying that with such fellow travelers, close friends and relatives, spiritual happiness and excitement are self-evident. In addition to their original close relationship, but also the course of cooperation in this career, so their feelings are even more unusual. When Qin Xue died, Zhi Yanzhai was very sad. He repeatedly mourned in the comment on writing, saying, "Qin died of tears, and the book was not finished; I tried to cry Qin, and my tears ran out! " "After reading five unfinished things, I can't help crying! Where was that writer thirty years ago? " "Today, I only hope that the Lord of nature will give me a piece of Qin and a piece of fat. It's a blessing in the book, and the other two will soon be satisfied in Jiuquan! " And so on, and once wrote a poem, including "money and sand are infinitely affectionate, and how much Mr. Yan Zhi hates".
Therefore, when introducing Cao Xueqin, only introducing Zhi Yanzhai is comprehensive.
Who is Fat inkstone?
Needless to say, Zhi Yanzhai's criticism of A Dream of Red Mansions in the early Qing Dynasty was directly related to Jin's criticism of Water Margin, Mao Zonggang's criticism of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Zhupo's criticism of Jin Ping Mei and The Journey to the West's criticism. But red inkstone is different from Jin, Mao, Zhang and Chen. Jin, Mao and others, just ordinary readers, express their opinions on readers' "vision"; However, Zhi Yanzhai is not. He has a very close relationship with the process of novel creation. Let's say:
1. Zhi Yanzhai is not a character irrelevant to the novel. His criticism is not a relic outside the novel text, but is regarded as an additional part of the novel by the author himself. Jia Xu Ben said for the first time:
Empty Taoist priest ... and then changed his name to Love Monk, and changed "Stone Story" to "Love Monk Record"; Give Wu Yufeng the title "A Dream of Red Mansions"; Meixi, the east foot of the sky, inscribed "Yue Feng Treasures". Then he wrote it with a unique title on the topic of Twelve Women in Jinling ... After reading it in Zhiyanzhai Hongxuan, he still used The Story of the Stone.
Therefore, unlike Jin and others, Zhi Yanzhai is the author's own approval and written in the article.
Secondly, as can be seen from the above quotation, it is quite important that Zhi Yanzhai decided to keep or change the title of the book. As you can imagine, Jin (if they are both at the same time) will never be allowed to decide whether to use other names instead of Water Margin in his novels.
Third, what text did Zhi Yanzhai decide to delete? Such as the thirteenth back to the last batch of said:
"Qin Keqing's Pagoda of Mourning for Heaven" was written by the author with the pen of history. Fourth, Zhi Yanzhai's Ordinary Example and Zhang Hui's general comments before and after. Looking at JOE, Chen Geng and Seven Books, we can see that some general comments before and after the reunification are all connected by three books, all in the same position. (As for the unique general comment of Qiben before and after the reunification, it is certainly not impossible. However, some of them were written in Chen Geng, and some of them ended with the words "Chicken feather winter night" and "Ding Hai Xia abnormal condition", which shows that these general comments were written by Yan Zhi. Also known as "The Story of Stone", this is a comparison of "Stone" records ... But this book is also called "Twelve Women in Jinling", and its name must be Twelve Women in Jinling. If there are twelve clouds in it, you will never understand that it is so-and-so extreme. ...
This is not the author's own tone, it should be written by Zhi Yanzhai alone.
Five, to copy and proofread the text. Jia said "stop copying and re-evaluating", and Ben also said "making corrections on the seventh day of May in the 21st year of Qing Qianlong", both of which are explanations for copying and correcting characters.
Sixth, Zhiyanzhai grasps the incomplete and undecided situation of the whole book, prompting the author to make up or decide. Seventy-five years ago, Geng wrote: "If there is no Mid-Autumn Festival poem, Qin will be snowed." "Once Qin Xue" of course means asking him to make up. Before the 17th National Congress, there was a note that said, "This session will be divided into two sessions." This is all evidence of Zhi Yanzhai's opinion.
Seven, Zhi Yanzhai made comments and explanations on the difficult allusions in the book (such as "Lotus"), the homophonic implication of language (such as the explanation of names and place names), the meaning of important things, and the intentions and ingenuity related to the plot of the text. This also shows that his criticism is not the "horizon" and general discussion of ordinary readers, but does have the nature of "an additional part of the novel text"
From time to time, Zhiyanzhai shows the meaning of "profound meaning", "profound meaning that others don't understand", "only those who approve books know", "only those who approve books can't hide it" and "have to hide it from readers", but what others don't understand and don't know, which shows that only he and the author understand the truth. According to the last example, he is a critic and also calls readers "readers". Obviously, he is not pretending to be a reader, but standing with the author and talking to the "reader".
From the above eight articles, we can roughly see the identity of Zhi Yanzhai; He said in a group of articles mourning Cao Xueqin:
From time to time, I only wish that the Lord of nature would give me a piece of Qin and a piece of fat, which is a reward for books (that is, auxiliary words are vulgar, and there are many cases in the batch; The original copy was wrong, and the other two were happy in Jiuquan!
Judging from this tone, it also shows that Zhi Yanzhai is pretending to be a part of the author, but he is often tied with the author. It may be an exaggeration to say that there are more or less works by Zhi Yanzhai in the creation of A Dream of Red Mansions.
So, who is this important red inkstone? In order to help us study A Dream of Red Mansions, we have to pay attention to him. We also try to explore.
Liu Quanfu once said in the postscript of Xu Jiaben:
Zhi Yanhe was a contemporary and witnessed all kinds of things, so his criticism of the pen was not arbitrary.
He is concerned about the person of Zhi Yanzhai, but everything is taken for granted. He can't know who Zhi Yanzhai is. The relationship between Yan Zi and Xue Qin is so close, but it is not just a "fan". Red inkstone was first mentioned by Philip Burkart Zhai (Yu Rui, author of Free Pen at Jujube Window). He said:
I have read the manuscript, and the book has written comments on his uncle's research and study on the surface, which was very true in the past; Renamed a Dream of Red Mansions.
Yu Rui was born not too late, but "Idle Pen and Jujube Window" is a very late book. Although its writing date can't be verified, there are seven sequels of A Dream of Red Mansions and The Edge of the Mirror Flower in the book, which can be seen from Jiaqing's birth year, but it is very old. The author greatly praised the original work, and denounced the shortcomings of Gao's "Continued Sable" and later "Continued Dream", which can be described as incisive and nuanced. He is really the first person to verify and identify the authenticity of A Dream of Red Mansions. But it's a pity that he mentioned an anecdote about Xueqin's family affairs, which is not reliable! As far as the quotation here is concerned, there are mistakes. Zhi Yanzhai was originally a person who restored the name of The Story of the Stone, but he said it was absurd that Zhi Yanzhai changed its name to A Dream of Red Mansions. He said that he had seen a batch of red inkstones on the manuscript, which was true, but he only knew that the "volume" eyebrow batch was "fat batch", and he didn't know that the double-line annotation batch was even more "fat batch". He said that this piece of red inkstone is Qin Xue's uncle, and the reason why he said this is what he said:
People who heard about Baoyu still refer to his uncle, not his own portrayal.
He believed it, and seeing that Yan Zhi was like Baoyu, he said that Yan Zhi was also Qin Xue's uncle. His "smell" itself is just a disguised "self-legend" (which can be called "uncle legend"), with a little transformation, and there is no difference in essence, so Siyuanzhai's inference that Zhi Yanzhai is "his uncle" is just a heresy.
Secondly, it is Hu Shi's "textual research". According to JOE's version of "Fat Review", he saw: "Zhi Yanzhai is very close to Qin Xue and is very familiar with Qin Xue's brothers." Because he said, "It can be seen that critic Zhi Yanzhai is Cao Xueqin's closest relative ... he may be Qin Xue's first cousin or second cousin. Maybe Cao Qing or Cao Jie's son. Songzhai seems to be his epigraph, and Zhiyanzhai is his nickname. " When he saw the "fat batch" of "Chen Geng Ben", he added:
Now reading this book, I believe that Zhi Yanzhai is the Baoyu who loves rouge, that is, Cao Xueqin himself. ..... "Red inkstone" is just a stubborn stone that loves rouge. It's the author's name, no doubt.
However, when we compare three authentic "fat batches", we know that this is not the case. The most powerful evidence is the criticism of the first eyebrow in the Jiaxu edition quoted above, which is a "pen of tears" in Wu Jia in August. As mentioned above, Xue Qin has died, and later said:
From time to time, I just hope that the master of nature will give me another piece of Qin and a piece of fat, which is the book (that is, the vice), and the other two will soon be satisfied!
If this is obviously a fat inkstone, he points to "one Qin and one fat" and says "the other two". These two men, that is, a Qin and a fat man, Qin died, and the fat man just mourned. How can you say that fat is celery?
Because of the unusual tone in this batch and the situations listed in the above eight articles, we have to wonder: since Zhi Yanzhai is never Xueqin, what kind of person should have such a subtle relationship with Xueqin? Did Hu Shi guess his cousin for the first time? We can also follow that "logic" and method to find this imaginary cousin. This man, Xifeng, plays a play, which he once wrote; Another example is the thirty-eighth poem "Ju Shi Xie Fu". Xiangyun invited guests, and Baoyu especially wanted acacia flowers to soak wine. This is a pun on the ups and downs of ancient and modern times with the word hot and cold; Then this person has been at this meeting. However, in these books, it is difficult to find "cousins" because they are all big gatherings where their wives and children are separated. If there is such a cousin, even if he can attend a special banquet, Baoyu's private life will never be known to be together, but in the nineteenth time, he picked his eyebrows and said:

Imagine, if you are a cousin, how can you possibly know the "details" of your daughter in Hong Yi Yuan? To sum up, we can draw an explanation: only if this person is a woman, everything makes sense. Please pay attention to the importance of this batch: first, it is definitely not a woman compared with Chai Mei; We can suspect that the ending not only means "a smile", but also a footnote to a joke. This seems to be what the author said to a woman, and it is also the tone that women remember, followed by the title poem:

Then "tea" can be a woman.

She has made it clear that she is not only a dreamer (that is, the person in the book, the word dream has a title and is a pun), but also seems to have had this big dream especially for the dreamer-the person who has experienced ups and downs. Then this man is obviously a main character in the book. Any questions? After thinking about it, one of the protagonists in the book, who is best friends with Baoyu, is not the real name. There are three women: Chai, Dai and Shi Xiangyun. According to the original work, Dai died young, although Chai married Baoyu, they did not grow old together, and their family background was very different from Baoyu's.
