What is an "imperative sentence"?

Imperative sentences are sentences used to express requests, commands, advice or suggestions.

①The subject of an imperative sentence is usually the second person you, but it is usually omitted, and the predicate verb uses the verb prototype. The negative form of the imperative sentence is: Don't + base form of verb +... Imperative sentences usually end with a period. To strengthen the tone, you can also use exclamation points. When expressing a polite request, please is often used at the beginning or end of the sentence. Please is used at the end of the sentence and preceded by a comma. If there are salutations in an imperative sentence, they should be separated by commas and placed at the beginning or end of the sentence. eg.

Please peel three bananas for me. Please peel three bananas for me.

Be quiet, please. Please be quiet.

Don't talk loudly in the classroom.

Dave, come here. David, come here.

②Imperative sentences containing first and third person subjects, the affirmative form is: Let+first person (me, us)+...; Let+third person (him/her/it/them) or noun+ …, its negative form is: Let + sb.+not+verb base form+…/ Don’t let + sb.+verb base form…. eg.

Let me have a try. Let me have a try.

Let Tom go there himself. Let Tom go there himself.

Don't let them play with fire. Don't let them play with fire.

The auxiliary verb do can be used before an affirmative imperative sentence to strengthen the tone, but this structure is only used for first-person imperative sentences and second-person imperative sentences without a subject. eg.

Do be quiet a moment. Must be quiet for a while.

Do let me go. Do let me go.

③In addition to being expressed by predicate verbs, imperative sentences can also be expressed by nouns, adverbs, etc. eg.

Help! Help! Patience! be patient!

Quickly! quick! Hands up! Put your hands up!
