Efficacy of absinthe
In addition to high alcohol content (traditionally higher than 68%), the main component of absinthe is wormwood herb (that is, Artemisiaabsinthium). This bitter herb contains a chemical called thujone, which is very similar to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the effective chemical component in cannabis.
This means that "absinthe and THC both interact with common receptors in the central nervous system to produce the efficacy of psychomimetic drugs", said scientist JdelCastillo in his article (Nature, January 31, 1975) on the psychological efficacy similarity between absinthe and marijuana.
unlike LaFée absinthe, if you see wormwood juice or infusion mentioned, you may also see wormwood in brackets. This herb is a member of Artemisia, which contains no wormwood and is usually called "Mugwort".
