It comes from the poem "Huatangchun·A pair of people in a lifetime" by Nalan Xingde, a poet in the Qing Dynasty, which means two people who spend a lifetime together.
The original text is as follows:
A pair of people from generation to generation, fighting for education and ecstasy.
If we miss each other but don’t love each other, who will be the spring?
It is easy to beg for blood from the blue bridge, but it is difficult to escape into the blue sea for medicine.
If you visit and drink Oxford, you will forget your poverty.
Translation: It is obvious that two people are destined to spend their whole lives together, but fate has arranged that they are separated from each other and cannot be together. If we miss each other but cannot love each other, then who is this spring coming for? It is not difficult to meet Lanqiao. What is difficult is that even if there is an elixir of immortality, we cannot fly into the moon palace to meet her like Chang'e did. If we could be like the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, crossing the Milky Way and being reunited, we would be happy no matter how poor our lives were.
