The historical changes of Shuanglin Temple

According to records, Yiwu Shuanglin Temple was built in Nanliang and was founded by the eminent monk Fu Dashi. After 15 centuries, it has become famous both at home and abroad for its large scale and numerous eminent monks. In the Northern Song Dynasty, there were more than 1,200 monk houses and more than 2,000 monks and nuns. It was known as "the most solemn among the countries in China", and also had the reputation of "the third in the world and the first in Jiangsu and Zhejiang". As early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, Japanese monks came to Shuanglin because of its reputation. After the Yuan Dynasty, even more Japanese monks came to Shuanglin Temple. Shuanglin monks also went to Japan to preach. However, due to historical reasons, Shuanglin Temple has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt for more than a thousand years. In 1958, when the People's Commune carried out major water conservancy projects, Shuanglin Temple was completely demolished, and the First Generation Zen Forest was sunk to the bottom of Shuanglin Reservoir.
