Du Mu's poem "Mountain Journey" is the source of the name Aiwanting.
Aiwan Pavilion is located in Qingfeng Gorge at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in Hunan Province. The pavilion faces west and faces east, surrounded by mountains on three sides. It was first built in the 57th year of Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1792) by Luo Dian, the dean of Yuelu Academy. It was originally called Hongye Pavilion and was later built by Bi Yuan, the governor of Huguang, according to the poem by Du Mu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. . Stop and sit in the maple forest at night, the frost leaves are as red as the flowers in February" ("Mountain Journey"), so it was renamed Aiwan Pavilion.
