In the second year of Tang Jingzong Baoli (826), Bai Juyi went to Suzhou for secretariat due to eye diseases, and Liu Yuxi also went to Luoyang for secretariat from Hezhou. The two poets met in Yangzhou. Bai Juyi wrote a poem for Liu Yuxi at the banquet. The poem says:
You drank wine with me for me, drank wine with me, and we played chopsticks and sang songs together.
Although your poetry is first-class and can be called a national champion, it is doomed that you can't get it.
Dou Rong's eyes are decent, but you stay lonely for a long time. Full officials have their own satisfactory positions, but you are empty.

Liu Yuxi's poem is a reward for Bai Juyi's poem.
In the year of Yongzhenyuan in Tang Xianzong (805), Yongzhen Innovation failed and Eight Sima was demoted. Liu Yuxi was first demoted to Lianzhou, then to Langzhou, then to Lianzhou, and then to Kuizhou and Hezhou. When writing this poem, it has been 22 years. It is estimated that I have been back in the capital for 23 years. Kuizhou was in Sichuan, Ba County in Qin and Han Dynasties, Langzhou in Hunan, Lianzhou in Guangdong and Hezhou in Anhui. During the Warring States period, it belonged to or was close to Chu State. Therefore, these relegated places are called "Bashan Chushui". A talented poet was abandoned to this desolate place. The last two sentences of Bai Juyi's poem say: "I also know that the name of the quilt is folded. Twenty-three years is too much!" " The meaning of these two poems is: you should be unlucky, who told you that you are so talented! Being demoted for 23 years at once is too much. There are sympathy and sighs here, as well as praise for Liu Yuxi. The first two sentences of Liu Yuxi's poem come from this. From their repeated singing of Twenty-three Years, we can see the intimate relationship between the two poets.
Then, the poet used two allusions to express his sadness. Ji Kang, one of the famous literati groups in Wei and Jin Dynasties, was framed by Zhong Hui and killed by Si Mazhao because he was dissatisfied with Sima Group, which was in power at that time. At the same time, his friend Lu An was also killed. Xiang Xiu, another talented person among the "Seven Sages of Bamboo Forest", was forced to take an exam in Luoyang after the establishment of the Jin Dynasty. After Ji and Lu's former residence, the sun went down and there was a piercing flute in the distance. He wrote an article entitled "Remembering Lao Fu" to mourn his dead friend. Love words are painful and short. This is what Wendy Fu refers to.
"Tales of Different Stories" said: "When Wang Jinshan was collecting firewood, he saw two boys playing chess. The boy gave the king something like a jujube pit. He was not hungry. At the end of the game, the boy instructed, "Ruke (axe handle) has rotted." Wang Zhi returned to his hometown and lived a hundred years. "The poet quoted the above two allusions, implying that he had been relegated for a long time. I feel like a lifetime ago when I come back this time. He feels that the world has changed, the personnel are completely different, and he is strange and disappointed with everything.
There are two sentences in Bai Juyi's poem: "The scenery is lonely, and the Manchu official position is exclusive", which means that all the contemporaries have been promoted, and only you have wasted your years in a remote place. Liu Yuxi wrote in his reply poem: "Qian Fan passed by the shipwreck and Wan Muchun was in front of the sick tree." The poet compares himself to a sinking ship and a sick tree, which is of course melancholy and very philosophical at the same time. On one side of the sinking ship, Qian Fan is competing! Before the sick tree, all trees win glory! The new forces are so energetic and unstoppable. But to persuade Bai Juyi not to be lonely, wasteful and sad for himself. This not only shows Liu Yuxi's open-minded mind, but also shows that this wise poet is full of confidence in the new force and future, and gives warm praise! It is precisely because of the "sinking boat" couplets (Qian Fan on the edge of sinking boat, Wan Muchun in front of the sick tree) that people suddenly wake up, wash away the sad and low emotional appeal, and give people high-spirited power. These two poems, vivid in image and profound in philosophy, have become famous aphorisms repeatedly recited by hundreds of millions of readers for more than a thousand years.
