Translation
I plant beans at the foot of Nanshan Mountain. The weeds are lush and the bean seedlings are sparse.
Get up early in the morning and go to the fields to weed weeds, and return home with a hoe under the moonlight at nightfall.
The narrow mountain path was overgrown with vegetation, and my clothes were wet with night dew.
It’s not a pity if your clothes get wet. I just hope it doesn’t go against my intention to return to farming.
Creative background
In 405 AD (the first year of Yixi reign of Emperor An of the Eastern Jin Dynasty), Tao Yuanming served as county magistrate in Pengze, Jiangxi Province. After only more than eighty days, he claimed that he did not want to "fight for five fights". "I bowed my head to the village boy" and went home with a seal. From then on, he ended his life of being sometimes invisible and sometimes official, unable to control himself, and he ended his life in the countryside. After returning, he wrote a set of five poems, "Returning to the Garden and Living in the Fields", describing the beauty of the pastoral scenery and the simplicity and loveliness of rural life, and expressing his joyful mood after returning to seclusion.
