In A.D. 1079, Su Dongpo was known to be transferred from Xuzhou to Huzhou. After taking office, he wrote Zongshen a "Huzhou Thank Table". This is a routine, but Su Shi often writes with emotion. Even if you write in red-headed documents, you can't forget to add some personal colors, saying that you are "stupid and ill-timed, and it is difficult to catch up with newcomers" and "the old man can't make trouble or support the king."
These words were used by the new party, saying that he "fooled the court and was arrogant" and "accused him of taking advantage of Yu and having ulterior motives"; Not only despised the imperial court, but also disloyal to the emperor. At that time, the voice of rebellion appeared in the court.
On July 28th, Su Shi, who had been in office for only three months, was arrested by officials. After a long journey of 20 days, Su Shi was escorted to the famous "Wutai" prison in Beijing and stayed there for 130 days. The so-called Wutai refers to the censorate of the supervisory organ at that time in the Northern Song Dynasty. Because there are cypress trees in the office of Jade Terrace, crows often inhabit and nest in the trees, hence the name Wutai.
Su Shi's life in Wutai prison was very embarrassing, especially before the final judgment came, he didn't even know if he could get out alive. At that time, Mai Su, the eldest son, went to the prison to bring him meals every day. Because the father and son can't meet, they secretly make an appointment, and usually only send food and meat. If there is bad news about the death penalty, they will send fish instead, so that they can make early preparations in their hearts.
On this day, because Mai Su ran out of money, he needed to go out to borrow it, so he quickly entrusted a distant relative to do it for him. In his hurry, Mai Su forgot to tell each other about the agreement between father and son. As a result, my relatives had a smoked fish on hand and gave it to Su Shi. When Su Shi saw the food, he was surprised and thought that he had been run away. In great sadness, he wrote a farewell poem for his brother Su Zhe:
The Lord is like heaven, and everything is spring.
I was stupid and died secretly.
Pay off your debts in a hundred years,
It's more tiring not to return after ten mouthfuls.
This is a green hill where bones can be buried.
He was alone in the rain.
Be your brother forever,
What's more, there is no cause in the afterlife.
The glory of the king moistens everything like spring. I made a mistake because of ignorance.
I have to pay off my old debts before I can finish my life, knowing that I will die, but a family of ten still has to take care of my brother.
After death, you can bury your bones in any green hill, but leave your brother alone. Every time it rains at night, you feel dejected.
They can only hope for the afterlife, and they will continue to be good brothers.
Fortunately, this was just an oolong incident, and Su Shi didn't really lose his life. Outside the prison, not only many senior officials pleaded for him, but even Wang Anshi, the retired leader of the political reform, urged Zongshen to "punish celebrities in the holy dynasty"
After many twists and turns, Su Shi was finally punished for slandering court officials and was demoted by two ranks. He was expelled from the capital on the same day and was demoted to deputy ambassador of Huangzhou Yingyong. Su Shi's Poem of Entrusting an Orphan has been told by later generations for thousands of years.
