The hometown I yearn for is the beautiful land of clouds and water; what I fear is that the dream of returning home is not suitable for this autumn.
Notes
⑴Zuyu: It rains continuously for a long time. One theory is that it means stopping due to rain.
⑵ Yunshuidi: It is equivalent to saying that Yunshui Township is a place filled with clouds and water.
Appreciation
This poem "The Rain" is a poem about traveling.
"Being a stranger in a foreign land", the lonely situation can easily breed homesickness, not to mention it is still in the late night of autumn rain? It is hard to get rid of thoughts about returning, the date of return is uncertain, and it is not suitable to return to dreams. All these are not due to "stagnation of rain".
The first sentence "It rained in Chang'an Night" explains the time, place and reason, which means that it rained and we had to stay in Chang'an tonight. But why didn't the poet say "The night rain lags in Chang'an"? Because moving the word "stagnation" in advance not only reflects how long it has been raining, but also highlights the length of the night. It seems that the thick, lingering rain has hindered the pace of time, delaying the arrival of dawn. We were about to return home, but we were hit by the seemingly endless rain all night long, which gave us a sense of helplessness and solemnity that we couldn't get rid of. It also builds momentum for the following "Ke Sorrow" and "Return to Dream".
"A lonely guest is sad with a broken lamp" describes the scene: under a lone lamp that is almost out of oil, a lonely guest with a sad face sits. The "broken lamp" not only fails to give people a feeling of light and warmth, but makes people feel more desolate and sad compared with the endless rainy night outside. The lamp is out, which means that you have been sitting alone for a long time; sitting alone for a long time means that the guests are unable to sleep; the guests are unable to sleep, which indicates that you are deeply homesick. "A Lone Guest with a Broken Lantern" and the previous "Rainy Night" together create a hazy, lonely and desolate atmosphere. In this artistic conception, tourists will naturally think of their hometown.
"Hometown, Yunshui Land" is a fictional representation. Is it the vast land where clouds and water meet the hometown? Is it the distance between my hometown and the clouds? Or does my hometown not exist in reality at all, but only in my ethereal homesickness like flowing clouds and flowing water? This sentence embodies the poet's unique haziness. It seems to be possible to understand it no matter how you understand it, and it gives people a real and intimate feeling no matter how you understand it.
"Returning to dreams is not suitable for autumn" is a direct expression of emotion. The language seems to be direct, but in fact it is implicit. Staying alone on a rainy night, sitting alone with a broken lamp, is a "good" time to be homesick and dreaming back. Why is it "not suitable for autumn"? Because in the poet's eyes, autumn is sadness. The autumn wind, autumn rain, autumn clouds and autumn water all make the poet sad. In a season full of sad scenery, in a dream full of melancholy, even if he returns to his hometown, won't he still be as sad? Forget it, just don’t dream of returning home! In fact, it is "unsuitable" to have such a dream in any season. The poet said "not appropriate" here, but actually meant "the most appropriate". There is a wonderful way of telling the truth without saying anything hurtful.
The theme of the whole poem is homesickness. The first two sentences say that the guest living in Chang'an was hampered by the rain, and he was worried about the broken lamp and missed his hometown. The last two sentences went a step further and said that his hometown was originally a place where the trees were clear and the clear water lingered, but it was the time when the autumn rain continued. At this time, even if I dream of returning to my hometown, what I see is always raining and falling, so it is not appropriate to return to my dream in this stormy autumn.
If we read this poem "Zu Yu" by using the method of knowing people and discussing poems, and using one's will against one's will, then "Zu Yu" is the dispute and criticism between the Niu and Li parties that have entangled the poet for a long time; "Guest" "Sorrow" refers to the poet's long-term oppression and oppression, the difficulty in realizing his ambitions and ideals, the resentment of being unappreciated, as well as the confusion and worry about his future and destiny; "hometown" is the ideal destination in the poet's heart and a beautiful state where talents can show their ambitions. "It is not appropriate to return to your dream" means that you should not give up and retreat easily, but should persist in waiting. After loneliness and sorrow, there will definitely be a time when the sky will turn green after the rain. "Guimeng is not suitable" means "Chang'an is suitable to stay". There are always more opportunities within the capital and around the emperor than in the land of "Yunshui". Understood here, the meaning is completely different. Therefore, it can also be said that "Zi Yu" is a "poetry about things" that expresses ambitions in the rain and has far-reaching implications.
