The Original Text, Translation and Annotation of Xing's Preface to Parallel Prose

First, the original poem:

Yan Gexing He Xu

In the twenty-sixth year of Kaiyuan, a guest returned from and signed Yan Ge. I feel comfortable defending this matter, so I am very harmonious.

The northeast border of China is shrouded in smoke and dust. In order to repel the barbaric invaders, our generals left their families. Stride forward together, looking like heroes should watch, and received the emperor's most cordial favor.

They walked through the elm pass between the flag stones with the sound of gongs and drums. Until their captain in Shahai gave the order with feathers, the hunting fire of the Tatar chieftain flashed along the Wolf Mountain.

The highlands and rivers on the outer border were cold and desolate, but soon the barbarians' horses ran wild in the wind and rain. Half of us were killed at the front, but the other half are still alive, and the beautiful girls are still singing and dancing for them at the camp.

When autumn ended on the gray beach, the grass withered, and a few surviving observers were by the lonely wall at sunset. Serve the just cause and despise life and enemies. However, despite what they have done, Elm Street is still unsafe.

Still at the front, the real clothes are thin, and Yu Zhu will cry after leaving. Still in this southern city, the young wife's heart is broken, while the soldiers on the northern border are looking forward to going home in vain.

The wind is blowing, and in the place of death and blue void, there is nothing ahead. Three times a day, the dark clouds of slaughter rose over the camp. All night, the drums on the hour trembled and gave a cold rumble.

Until the white sword is seen again, spattered with red blood, when death becomes a responsibility, who will stop to think about fame? Don't you see that the battlefield is tragic? Today we are named Li, the great general who lived a long time ago.

Second, the original translation:

In the far northeast border of North Korea, smoke filled the air, and North Korean generals bid farewell to their hometowns to sweep away cruel and vicious enemies.

Men always value and gallop on the battlefield, and the son of heaven especially appreciates and gives glory.

The troops beat drums for the third level, and the flag fluttered in the wind and wrapped around Jieshi.

Captain frontier fortress's urgent documents flew over the vast desert, and the fire lit by the enemy lit up the gloomy Wolf Mountain.

The land of the border, how far away; Mountains and rivers are lonely and desolate.

The enemy rode wildly and invaded wantonly; The wind is wrapped in rain and the momentum is fierce.

Soldiers have been fighting at the front for half their lives, and generals are watching beautiful women sing and dance in the barracks.

In the desert where autumn is coming to an end, the weeds on the edge wither; The lonely city reflected by the setting sun has no soldiers to fight.

Deeply treated by the emperor's kindness, he turned a blind eye to the enemy; Fighting hard in Guanshan, we still failed to break through the heavy encirclement of the enemy.

Soldiers in real armor have worked very hard to defend the border for a long time; The wife at home hates parting and cries very sadly every day.

Young women in the south of the city miss their husbands and are heartbroken; Recruit people to turn around in the distant sky north of thistle.

If I am stuck in Changfeng Wan Li, how can I fly this far way? The border is vast and gloomy, and there is nothing.

Arranged in the battlefield during the day, murderous and dark; At night, the military camp is heavily guarded and the alarm sounds frequently.

Is the oath of service to the country for personal merit?

Everyone knows the hardships on the battlefield, and people still miss General Li Guang.

Third, appreciate poetry:

Ge Yanxing is an ancient name of Yuefu, a zodiac word and a flat tone. Volume 32 of Yuefu Poetry Collection contains 10 works on the same topic before Gao Shi, focusing on women not returning to work, but this one is quite different from it, focusing on the border war. The preface before the poem (see Zhu Dongrun's "Selected Works" to solve the problem), from which we can see that this work written by a friend has something to do with Zhang Shousheng's attack on Xi, but the whole poem is not limited to a certain person, but is written according to the poet's experience of riding a bicycle into Zhao Yan in the eighteenth year of Kaiyuan, which is an artistic summary of the Northeast Frontier War at that time. In the 26th year of Kaiyuan, a friend went to the Great Wall with the general, and when he came back, he wrote Ge Yanxing for me. I felt some military input about conquest and defense, so I wrote this poem to sing with it.
