Appreciation of Meng Haoran's Passing the Village for the Aged

Lao Guo Ren Zhuang Meng Haoran

Prepare chicken and rice for me, old friend,

You entertained me on your farm.

We look at the green trees around your village.

And pale blue in remote mountainous areas.

We open your window to the garden and fields,

Talking about Sang Ma with a glass in hand.

By the time we spend our holidays in the mountains,

I'll come back at chrysanthemum time.

Appreciation of Meng Haoran's Poems

The first couplet "Prepare chicken rice for me, old friend, you entertain me on your farm" is about an old friend who killed a chicken to cook and invited a poet to his home. "Tianjia" has no delicacies, and a plate of fat chicken has become the delicacy of old friends. This simple and natural poem not only shows the sincere friendship between the poet and the old friend, but also shows the ease of rural life, giving people a cordial and friendly feeling from the beginning.

The couplet "We watched the green trees around your village and the distant light blue mountains" describes what the poet saw when he entered the village. The first of these two sentences depicts a close-up, with lush green trees around the village, quiet and quiet; The next sentence outlines the vision, and the majestic green hills build a natural barrier for the countryside, giving people a feeling of broadening their horizons. Poets use this ordinary and natural scenery to express the beauty of mountains and rivers and their love for rural life. In addition, these two poems also imply that Meng Haoran's friendship with his old friend is based on the pursuit of ideals and life interests, which paves the way for the following hearty.

Tie "We open the windows of your garden and field and talk about mulberry and hemp with cups in our hands" means "feast".

At an old friend's house, the poet held a lamp by the window and saw the threshing floor and lush vegetable garden outside the window, which unconsciously attracted the attention of the poet and his old friend to the harvest of pastoral crops, and the harvest of that year became the main topic of the banquet.

Here, home cooking, home-brewed wine and rural scenery, supplemented by home-cooked talk, completely immerse poetry and painting in a cordial and natural atmosphere.

Wait until the mountain is on holiday, and I'll come back at chrysanthemum time. Meng Haoran was deeply attracted by farm life, so when he left, he told his master frankly that he would come back to see chrysanthemums on the Double Ninth Festival in autumn. A few simple poems, the enthusiasm of old friends to treat each other, the pleasure of being a guest, and the cordial harmony between the host and the guest are all on the paper. This can't help but remind people of Du Fu's "being drunk by Tianfu mud is beautiful, strict and sincere": "When will the bright moon start, I will stay, and I still want to be promoted." Du's father supports people, and he is in a hurry; Montessori made an appointment with an old friend again to soften his words. The difference between the stagnation and Meng's calmness may give us a glimpse of some news.

Poetry has sincere feelings and simple language, and even the level of description is completely natural. It is in this uncut and unadorned "nature" that the poet skillfully blends artistic beauty into the flesh and blood of the whole poem, and outlines a natural poetic realm, which is plain and lasting, refreshing to read and memorable.

Shen Deqian called Meng Haoran's poems "light but not light" (Tang poetry). In other words, when reading Meng Shi, we should appreciate its inner charm through its faint appearance. Passing through the Old Village is not the lightest of Meng's poems, but its description is plain, the language is clean, and there are almost no exaggerated sentences and exciting words, which can also be regarded as "light enough to see poetry" (Meng Haoran of Wen Yiduo).
