Reflection on the Old Sailor's Journey (Excerpt) Coleridge

first part

The old sailor stood by the roadside,

Three. He stopped one.

"You have a gray beard and strange eyes.

Stop me. For what?

The groom's house opened the door,

I am a relative of his family;

All the guests are here and the party is ready.

There is a lot of noise and joy. "

His hand like a withered vine, hooked the guests:

"Once upon a time there was a ship out to sea-"

"Fuck you! Let me go! White beard fool! "

His hand was released at once.

His eyes were like ghosts, and he hooked the guests-

The guests stood quietly,

Be obedient, like a three-year-old doll;

The old sailor has the upper hand.

The guests are sitting on the rocks-

No way, he can only listen;

This shiny old sailor

Describe the past clearly:

"It's buzzing, and the ship leaves Hong Kong.

Excited, let's start;

Through the church, through the hills,

Passing the high lighthouse.

The sun rises from the sea on the left,

As if from the bottom of the sea;

It shines brightly and swims in the sky.

Sink to the right into the sea.

The sun is rising every day,

Noon is facing the masthead-"

The guests kept beating their chests,

He heard the harmony of the pipes.

The bride's face is as red as a rose,

She came and entered the hall;

A group of singers walked in front of her,

Nod and sing.

The guests kept beating their chests,

No way, he can only listen;

This shiny old sailor

Describe the past clearly:

"The storm at sea is blowing,

The momentum is fierce;

It flapped its wings and rampaged,

Drive us to the south.

Sailboats gallop, storms roar,

Inclined mast, wet bow;

We've been running south-

Like a hunted fugitive.

Stepping on the faint shadow of the tracker,

Run away with your head down

There is heavy fog and snow.

It's getting cold;

The ice floes are as high as the masthead,

Green is like a gem.

Snow and fog, snow-covered icebergs

Bright but cold and sad;

People are gone, animals are extinct,

I looked around and all I saw was ice.

There is ice here, there is ice there,

Besiege us in the middle;

The ice broke, humming and howling,

Confusing

Albatross in ice and sea.

Fly through the clouds;

We seem to have met the apostles of Christ,

Rejoice.

He never eats the food we feed him,

It flies around the boat and back again.

There was a thunderbolt and the iceberg broke apart.

We broke out of the tight encirclement!

A pleasant south wind blows behind him;

The albatross followed the ship,

When the sailor called, it came-

Come and peck.

For nine nights in a row, clouds covered the fog,

It sleeps on the sail;

Successive dry cliffs, pale and pale moon.

Reflecting the pale smoke. "

"May God help you, old sailor!

Why are you shocked? "

"I drew my bow and arrow, and the arrow left.

The albatross lost its life!

the second part

Now the sun rises from the right,

As if from the bottom of the sea;

Covered with a layer of fog, it is half exposed in Shimada Hanzo.

Sink into the sea to the left.

The pleasant south wind is still blowing;

Without that amiable companion:

No seabirds will fly at once-

Come and peck.

I committed a crime, as if I were afraid I would

Troubled the whole ship's brothers;

They all say it's all because of the bird.

There was a south wind.

How dare you shoot this bird!

It is it that attracts the south wind. '

Not black or red, dignified and solemn,

The golden sun spewed out;

The crowd shouted: It's all the bird's fault.

It caused thick smoke.

You did a good job, and you shot that demon bird!

It caused the smoke. '

The wind blows and the waves fly,

When the ship is sailing, it leaves lines;

In front of us, this calm sea

No one has ever broken in.

The south wind stopped and the sails fell.

Gloomy, lifeless;

We're looking for words, just trying to break through.

The sea is embarrassingly dull.

At noon, in the hot copper sky,

The poisonous sun is bright red as blood,

It's facing the masthead,

The size of the full moon.

Day after day, day after day,

The ship stopped and did not move;

Like a boat painted by a painter.

Stop at the painting sea.

Water, water, water everywhere,

Bubbled the board of the ship;

Water, water, water everywhere,

But you can't drink it.

Even the sea is rotten! Oh, my God!

This magical realm has actually appeared!

Sticky bugs crawl in and out,

Covered with sticky seawater.

At night, everywhere, in groups, flying around,

Eyes full of phosphorescence of jack-o'-lantern;

The sea is green, blue and white.

Like a witch boiling oil slurry.

Some people get certain information in their dreams:

It is the spirit of the fog country and the snow country.

Chasing us all the way, torturing us,

He hid in the deep sea of ninety.

I haven't touched the water for days,

Tongue withered by roots;

Everyone was speechless,

My throat is full of coal ash.

The whole ship was staring at me, young and old,

How fierce those eyes are!

There is no cross under my neck,

But the dead bird is hanging.

the third part

Life is so sad! My throat is on fire!

My eyes are numb, numb.

Life is so sad! Suffer such torture!

I can hardly open my eyes.

Barely opening my eyes, I can see the west.

Something is coming.

At first, like a tiny spot,

Then like fog;

Swimming, swimming constantly, and finally.

Show a fixed shape.

Spots, fog, fixed shapes,

Swim, swim closer;

It bounces, turns left and right,

Like avoiding underwater goblins.

My throat is burnt and my lips are black.

Impermeable, dumbfounding dilemma;

They are all dumb! They all stood still!

I bit my arm and the blood moistened my throat.

Just shout:' It's a boat! "This is a ship!"

My throat is burnt and my lips are black.

They listened with their mouths open;

When I heard that it was a ship, thank goodness!

Everyone smiles and breathes in again and again.

It's like drinking.

Look at it! I shouted,' It doesn't turn any more!

It comes to save us from danger;

There is no wind or tide at sea,

It is straight ahead! '

The sea in the west is as red as fire,

Dusk is just around the corner;

On the waves of the west, the parting sun

Round, big and bright;

The ship monster rushed in.

Between us and the sun.

Thick fences block the sun,

(May the Holy Mother have mercy! )

It's like walking through a prison fence and being exposed.

The hot side of the sun.

Oh, dear! My heart is pounding! )

That ship came too fast!

It's a sail-like a veil,

Shining in the sunset?

Block the sun like an iron fence.

But what about the ribs of the ship?

Is that the only woman on the boat?

There are two more, and the other one is' death'?

"Death" is her colleague?

Red lips, Huang Chengcheng's hair,

The woman looks very indulgent;

The skin is white and miserable, like leprosy;

She is a ghost, called' coming back from the dead',

It can freeze people's blood

Here comes the boat, standing side by side with us.

Two people on the boat are betting;

This game has been set! You lost and I won! '

She said, whistling three times.

The sunset fell into the water and the stars gushed out.

At this moment, the night shadows are heavy;

The strange ship went away and heard the sound of the sea.

Disappear instantly.

We squinted while listening;

Terror drank my plasma in my heart,

As if drinking water in a cup!

Dew drops from the sail,

The helmsman under the lamp turned pale,

The stars are dark and the night is thick;

A crescent moon rises in the east,

There is a bright star, impartial,

Stay at the foot of the new moon.

The stars follow the moon, a ship full of sailors.

There's no time to hum,

They all writhed in pain and cursed me-

Replace your mouth with your eyes.

200 sailors, none left,

(Without a grunt)

Plop, plop, plop,

Fell like a log.

The soul flew out of their skin—

Fly to heaven or hell!

Ghosts passed me one by one,

Swish, like a whistling arrow! "

Precautions:

The day after the old sailor shot the albatross, the fog cleared and the sun was shining. Other sailors thought that the previous smog was caused by albatrosses, and it was sunny after killing albatrosses.

The guiding pillar of "Fog Country and Snow Country". "Pursuing punishment" means that the suffering of the crew after the death of the albatross was caused by the Antarctic gods, which was intended to avenge the birds. "Acid" means fathoms (unit of length, used to measure water depth), and one fathoms is six feet.

"Death" and "Death and Life" bet on the fate of the cast (dice). When betting on the fate of other sailors, the winner is "death"; When you bet on the fate of an old sailor, you win "the life of the dead". So all the other sailors had to die, and the old sailor survived.

According to the author's original note, sailors think the stars under the moon are ominous.

Make an appreciative comment

Coleridge is not only an English romantic poet, but also one of the founders of English romantic aesthetics. The most important part of his aesthetic system is the theory of imagination. In Chapter 14 of Biography of Literature, he said that the poet's genius takes conscience as the body, imagination as the outfit, movement as the life and imagination as the soul. It is ubiquitous and exists in everything, making everything a beautiful and spiritual whole. His long poem A Sailor's Journey (or translated Ode to an Ancient Ship) is regarded as a unique treasure in English poetry and a perfect embodiment of his aesthetic principles.

The Journey of the Old Sailor, published in 1798, is Coleridge's only complete long narrative poem. This poem once had a subtitle "The Poet's Dream". According to Wordsworth's memory, its original material came from the dream of a friend of Coleridge's. The general plot is as follows: a ship is sailing out to sea, but unfortunately it is blown to the South Pole and trapped in an iceberg. At this time, an albatross appeared, which led the ship out of the predicament, but the old sailor killed it mercilessly. Later, the old sailor's cruelty and indifference to life were punished, and all the crew members died of thirst. Only the old sailors were tortured in pain and begged for death. Finally, the repentant old sailor saw the beautiful water snakes and subconsciously prayed for them. It was this move that was forgiven by the gods, so with the help of the elves, the old sailor returned to his hometown and began his missionary career.

The whole poem is divided into seven parts. The first three parts of the poem describe that the old sailor shot the albatross for no reason and was punished by the Antarctic genie. The fourth and sixth parts tell the story that the old sailor was finally forgiven after a series of hardships; The seventh part describes the old sailor returning to his hometown and constantly educating the world with his own painful experience.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about this poem is its grotesque imagery and bold imagination. As the second part wrote: "Even the sea is rotten! ...../Sticky bugs crawl in and out,/crawling all over the sticky sea. " There are also phosphorescent jack-o'-lanterns flying around the sea at night, green and blue waters, windless skeleton boats, Antarctic elves hidden in Nine Searches for the Deep Sea, red-light mutant fairies, enchanting faces, dazzling hair as gold, skin as white as leprosy, and "living dead" ghosts whose bodies are "neither rotten nor smelly" under the scorching sun. The grotesque and supernatural images in the whole poem have brought great visual impact to people.

The poem Sailor's Journey also contains profound religious themes, the most obvious of which is the theme of punishment and redemption in Christianity. It is not difficult to see that in long poems, the albatross symbolizes the savior Jesus, the old sailor shoots the albatross, and the savior Jesus is crucified by ignorant human beings. After the old sailor shot the albatross, the whole ship was punished: when the ship reached the equator, it was motionless, and the sailors were scorched in the hot sun until their lips were chapped and people could not communicate with each other. Sailors are completely imprisoned by loneliness and fear. There is water everywhere, but you can't drink a drop; The ship was full of people, but no one spoke. This cruel punishment really comes from the hand of Almighty God. The old sailor symbolizes the independent soul, and the skeleton boat carrying the old sailor symbolizes the human body. The Antarctic symbolizes hell, and sailors are unconsciously blown to the Antarctic, just as people often don't realize the temptation to go to hell. England, which appears many times in long poems, is a symbol of heaven. When the old sailor saw England, he felt very gratified, and when he was about to enter heaven, his body symbolized by the skeleton ship had to die. Therefore, the ship sank. When the navigator and his children saw that the ship was sinking, they saved the old sailor, just like an angel saved a new soul and took it to heaven.

Coleridge extended "the love of Christ" to love all things in The Sailor. In the seventh part, he wrote, "I love human beings and birds and animals. /Prayer was not in vain. /The more sincere your love for all living things is, the more effective your prayers will be; /Because God loves everything-/He created everything. "

The Journey of the Old Sailor can be described as the interweaving of dreams and reality, the blending of images and scenes, the emphasis on mystery, strangeness, horror and obscurity, sensibility and musicality, which makes us feel a strong sense of beauty and deserves to be called a romantic "manifesto".
