Who is Chaplin?
Charlie. Charlie Chaplin (1889.416-1977.12.25), a British film actor, director and producer, was the most creative and influential comedian in the silent film period. As early as before the First World War, Chaplin conquered the world cinema with his acting talent. As Bernard Shaw commented, "Chaplin is a unique genius in the film industry". Chaplin's stage career lasted for 75 years, from his childhood on the Victorian stage and the British concert hall to the end of his life at the age of 88. During his life, he made more than 80 comedies, including The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Mr. Verdun and Stage Career. These films reflect the evolution of Chaplin from an ordinary humanist to a master of critical realism. Chaplin, with his superb performing arts, deeply sympathized with the lower class workers and made a bitter satire on the various drawbacks of capitalist society. At the same time, Chaplin's high-profile public image and private life have also been touted and disputed. During McCarthy's period in 1950s, Chaplin was forced to emigrate to Europe because of his left-wing tendency. In the late 1960s, Chaplin finished his last film, The Countess from Hong Kong, and his health gradually declined. 1972, Chaplin won the Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award. 1977 Christmas, Chaplin, who settled in Warwick, Switzerland, passed away quietly in a deep sleep.
