These poems were originally circulated among the people and preserved by Yuefu, and were called "Song Poems" by Han people, and only called "Yuefu" or "Han Yuefu" in Wei and Jin Dynasties. Poems written by later scholars imitating this form are also called "Yuefu Poems".

Jiangnan and the fifteenth conquest in Yuefu poems are neat five-character poems, which are generally considered to be works of the Western Han Dynasty. By the Eastern Han Dynasty, there were more and more five-character poems in Yuefu poems, and their artistry was becoming more and more perfect.
It influences and promotes each other with literati's five-character poems. Mature five-character poetry was bred in Yuefu folk songs and literati's creation in Han Dynasty and became the main form of poetry in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. Five-character poems originated in the Han Dynasty, and Yuefu poems such as Jiangnan and Joining the Army in the Fifteenth Five-character are all neat five-character poems. Generally, these two capitals are works of the Western Han Dynasty.
