The poems composed by Shangguan Yi during the Zhenguan period are outstanding for their precise composition and clear and graceful scenery. For example, the couplet "The scenery is exposed, and the sky above the snowflakes is green" in "Guilin Palace in Early Spring" reflects the poet's outstanding scenery description skills and his ability to create a bright and vivid poetic environment. Another example is "Fenghe Mountain at Night in Autumn":
The hall tents are clear and flaming, and the chariot road contains autumn yin. The sad wind moves the Han Dynasty buildings, and the flowing water flows into the Yuqin. The clouds are flying and the wild geese are flying, and the clear forest is clear above the moon. There is a sound of dripping dew branches, and the sky is filled with smoke and deep valleys.
Although this poem was written by Feng He, the poet deliberately got rid of the old habit of picking up words from similar books, focused on careful observation of the scenery, and invented new words to describe the scene. Through the dynamic changes of objects, the euphemism of emotions is written, thus forming a poetic environment where emotions are hidden inside and show outside. This kind of poetry, with its delicate brushwork, graceful elegance and completeness, has greatly advanced the technique of describing objects and scenes in five-character poetry, and has become a new poetry style that people imitate. The legend in the "Old Book of Tang Dynasty" states: "Shangguanyi's five-character craftsmanship is based on the elegance and beauty of the body. The ritual is noble and conspicuous, so there were many people who learned from it at that time, and people at that time called it Shangguan style."
The "Qicuo Wanmei" style of Shangguan style has the tendency to attach importance to the formal skills of poetry and pursue the beauty of poetry's voice and words. The theory of "six pairs" and "eight pairs" proposed by Shangguan Yi uses the symmetrical effect of sound and meaning to distinguish the form of couplets. It has expanded from the general study of parts of speech and sounds to the configuration of the overall image of couplets. In his works, there are many good sentences that convey the scenery and convey the spirit through exquisite antithesis, such as "Fenghe Autumn Day Jimu Yingzhi": "The fallen leaves are floating in the shadow of cicadas, and the horizontal flow is written about the flying geese." ": "The magpies fly over the mountains and the moon rises, and the cicadas noisy in the wild wind in autumn." Dependent on the body and objects, they are closely attached to each other and become the most beautiful poem in the world. The sound is clear, the rhyme is fluttering, and it has natural beauty. It reflects a relatively healthy and cheerful creative mentality and graceful and elegant demeanor, and became a typical paradigm representing the highest level of creation of court poets at that time.
"Old Book of Tang·Biography of Shangguan Yi": "Working in five-character poetry, it is best to take Qi Cuo and Wanmei as the basis. Since Yi is noble, many people at that time studied its style, and people at that time called it Shangguan style. "The "Qicuo Wanmei" style of Shangguan style has the tendency to attach importance to the formal skills of poetry and pursue the beauty of poetry's voice and words. Shangguanyi summarized the duality method in poetry after the Six Dynasties, and proposed the theory of six pairs and eight pairs, using sound, meaning and symmetrical effect to distinguish the form of the couplet. This has expanded from the general study of parts of speech and phonetics to the overall image configuration of couplets.
The "six pairs" are: one is a pair of correct names, such as heaven and earth to the sun and moon; the second is a pair of the same kind, such as flowers and leaves to grass buds; the third is a pair of continuous beads, such as Xiaoxiao to Hehe; the fourth is a pair of double sounds, such as Yellow locust trees versus green willows; the fifth is a pair of overlapping rhymes, like hesitation versus openness; the sixth is a pair of pairs, like a spring tree versus an autumn pond. The "Eight Pairs" are roughly similar.
