Wen Yiduo's View of Poetry Creation
Wen Yiduo said in the Metric of Poetry: "The power of poetry includes not only the beauty of music (syllables), the beauty of painting (rhetoric), but also the beauty of architecture (symmetry of knots and neatness of sentences)." This is the famous theory of "three beauties" of new poetry meter. In art, Wen Yiduo devoted himself to the practice of "three beauties". Regarding the beauty of painting, Wen Yiduo noticed "rhetoric", that is, poets should use more words to express forms and colors, and use painting factors to convey poetry as artistic conception. Wen Yiduo did just that. The artistic conception of his poems always presents colorful pictures. The beauty of music, Wen Yiduo thinks: "The reason why poetry can stimulate emotions lies entirely in its rhythm." The elements of rhythm are "tonal scale, flat tone and rhyme", among which even scale is the most important. Each line of poetry should be composed of several scales as the basic unit of poetry. Architectural beauty means that poetry should be arranged neatly. Wen Yiduo said in A Study of Metric Poetry: "One of the greatest characteristics of China's art is uniformity, which is particularly remarkable in its architecture and poetry." Chinese characters are square characters. If each poem has the same number of words in a section, all the sections of the whole poem will form a series of symmetrical whole, and the poem will have neat beauty. The beauty of painting mainly means that the words of poetry should be beautiful and colorful. The beauty of architecture mainly refers to paying attention to "symmetry of section" and "unity of sentences" from the overall appearance of poetry.
