What genre of literary works is prose?

Prose is one of the literary genres. With the development of literature, the meaning and scope of prose names are constantly evolving. In ancient China, prose was called "prose" compared with verse and parallel prose, that is, all works, whether literary or non-literary, were called "prose". Modern prose refers to literary works other than poetry, drama and novel, including prose, essays, travel notes, biographies, memoirs and reportage. In recent years, biography, reportage and prose have developed into unique styles, so people tend to narrow the scope of prose.

Prose is a short, pithy, extensive, true and natural literary genre. It can quickly and timely reflect social reality and is called "literary light cavalry".

Modern prose refers to a literary genre that is juxtaposed with novels, poems and plays, and has two understandings: broad and narrow.

Prose in a broad sense refers to all literary prose except poetry, novels and dramas. In addition to discussing lyric prose, it also includes communication, reportage, essays, memoirs, biographies and other styles. With the development of writing discipline, many styles stand on their own feet, and the scope of prose is shrinking day by day.

Prose in a narrow sense refers to literary prose, which is a kind of literary style mainly based on narration or lyric, with extensive materials, flexible brushwork, short length and rich love for literature.
